Description Jim fenton 2021-09-11 18:28:46 CEST
Description of problem:
On my dual screen system with the Application Menu button on the left end of the Applicaton Menu Bar, clicking on the Application Menu on the right screen opens the menu on the right edge of the left screen. The same effect occurs for tooltips for icons on the Application Menu Bar. Depending on the width of the tool tip, it may not appear on the same screen.

How reproducible:

Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Click on Application Menu button
2. Observe menu location

If I move the Application Menu button to the right of at least four other icons on the the Application Menu Bar, the menu appears above it on the same screen.

Since I somes use the left monitor for another computer, not being able to see the application menu becomes a problem.

Thank you for this report.

This is a simple and useful work-around: create four useless icons on the LH side. Crude, but you can at least work on the RH screen.

Can you please say:
- Give the output of (which includes the desktop in use):
 $ inxi -SGxx
- Do you know whether the problem happens with other desktops?
- For the RH screen, what happens for other taskbar icons within the first four: does the application launch on the same screen?

Additional information about my setup:
Dell Latitude laptop on an E-Port dock using two Display Port outputs from the dock and not using the laptop display. The left display was configured as primary. KDE Plasma 5.20.4.

> - Do you know whether the problem happens with other desktops?
I tried opening the laptop as a third display to the far right. It did not display the same problem.

> - For the RH screen, what happens for other taskbar icons within the first
> four: does the application launch on the same screen?
It varied. Some applications launch on the left screen, others on the right. I think they may have been launching on the last display they were used on.

I went into System Settings > Display and Monitor and switched the left and right monitor. This seems to have solved the problem. I was able to switch them back and the fix held through a sleep and a reboot cycle. I will report back if the problem resurfaces.

This may be related to my setup. I have a Dell Latitude connected through an e-Port Dock, with the monitors contected to the DP outputs of the Dock. I normally keep the laptop closed, but sometimes I have to open it, and I have had occasional issues with the application panel disappearing or background changing when the system switches between two and three displays.

I also have problems when I try to add an application panel. I have to reboot with the laptop open because the panel gets created on the laptop screen, even when it's closed. The panel does not appear just by opening the laptop. I may submit this as a separate bug report.

Thank you for all this additional information: complicated setup...

My question misunderstood. I meant any desktop other than (in this case) Plasma, like Xfce, Gnome, LXDE? I am not even sure whether they handle multiple screens. Forget this for now.

Another cunning remedy!

> I will report back if the problem resurfaces.
Fair enough. For the moment, I will leave this with Bugsquad, and later close it if all continues to go well; or assign to the KDE group if not.

Over half a year later, assuming everything continued to go well, so closing this report.
