Description of problem: With new GPU's nvidia, the driver 460.80 doesn't work. It's kernel panic, and black freeze screen crash. No capacity to obtain terminal command with an ctrl + alt + f2. Access only on recovery mode Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): 460.80 How reproducible: Make the update of mageia 8 and own a Recent GPU. Tried with RTX 2070,3080 & GTX 1650,1660 Steps to Reproduce: 1. Update MGA 8 2. Reboot Need to return on the driver 460.73.
remove "splash quiet" from kernel command line to hopefully catch the kernel panic also try with 460.84 I just submitted to nonfree updates_testing
Hi, Thanks for the help, I've tried the two solutions. And it's not ok. no improve with or without splash and quiet & the Nvidia driver 460.84 doesn't solved the problem. Need to come back with 460.73.
Removing splash quiet was not intended to improve it, but give a chance to see messages on screen. Did you see something that may be of help? FWIW using 460.84 on my workstation now (no previous problems), with new mesa and kernel 5.12.8-desktop-1 mga8-64.

Nope. No indications, just a black screen with an underscore. @Morgan, what is your GPU? The problem appear only with new GPUs... Rtx and last gtx
As I said no problems before either on my system, I only installed as a roptine to check it works on my system. This machine often run most of testing updates, along he lines wider testing give better quality.
Can you just answer my question. If you have an GTX 970 (for example) it's normal you have no issues. In my other desktop, i have no issues with this driver (old GPU - GTX960). Just on my desktop with RTX 2070 wich i have the issues. And i have no problem, with the previous driver 460.73.
GM107 [GeForce GTX 750]
Well you're lucky, no issues for you indead ;)
Please post the output of: $ inxi -S -Gxx to give the graphics details (& kernel). @tmb : this is inevitably destined for kernel/drivers. It is curious that we have as yet no other complaint: "new GPUs... Rtx and last gtx" will be around.
Summary: Driver Nvidia 460.80 crash with new GPU => Driver Nvidia 460.80 crash with new GPU (but not with 460.73)
Hello thanks Lewis for your time, On the Nvidia site we have some post about this like here https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/black-screen-after-install-of-nvidia-driver-ubuntu/109312/175 If you look on the bottom, some people have the same issues. I've also made a YouTube video and some opensuse users and pop os users have the same trouble. They all came back on the driver 460.73. Pop os, is a system 76 distro who sell rtx laptop and the go back on the old drivers. Please consider my issues. I send you the output of your command as soon as possible
Thanks for the NVidia forum topic link. (In reply to vinceff from comment #4) > No indications, just a black screen with an underscore. How far did you get before this? It is usually the end result of a failed boot, in which case there is console output before. If you see a boot splash screen, Esc (possibly more than once) shows console output. (In reply to vinceff from comment #10) > I've also made a YouTube video Please post the link to that.

It is curious that we > have as yet no other complaint: "new GPUs... Rtx and last gtx" will be > around. we have other users of both new rtx and gtx cards that dont have this bug, so there is probably something more system specific that fails... (for example David has a RTX2060 and he has no problems with either 460.80 or 460.84) but without logs and/or crash info I cant do anything
Hi everyone, @Lewis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sl9wYLCL5g On the link, it's special for you to see what i've done to have the issues. On the first 30s i show you the output of inxi -S -Gxx @Thomas, i'm very surprised about your answer, but it's may be a good news if someone, can works fine with this drive. I've a french gaming linux discord, all rtx owner have the problem. (more than ten user) Here my oldest video to warn about the driver, and i've somepeople who shares the same experience. (in french) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2S47kETr58&t=1s Thanks again to try to help

Hi everyone, I solved the problem. The solution has posted on the nvidia site, when i plug my screen with HDMI cable instead of Display port, all is ok, and mageia boot on kde. Hallelujah /D Well it answer why some people doesn't have the problem and why some others have it! Thank you for your support
That is not a solution but a workaround that may work for most or not. I have another problem i did not investigate deeper and now forgot the details, but on my new screen i have to use (at least it was so on mga7) *displayport* on this graphic card...
DisplayPort output should always be available as soon as device is booting. There nothing we can do with nonfree drivers but we can propose you the latest one from upstream. An update has been sent: https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29079 And nvidia-current 460.84 is now in repository. Also, can you provide here : $ inxi -MSGxx When we ask for output of such command, we want a copy/paste here that everybody can read instead of a youtube video, thanks.

Looks like nVidia has found and fixed the issue, so a new driver should be out soon-ish... https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/465-24-02-page-fault/175782/136
It seems it is fixed in 470.42.01 from https://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/176525/en-us But, this is Beta drivers. Assigning to Kernel and Drivers maintainers. We will wait for that nvidia release. No ETA at this time.

Can this bug get closed as OLD as we have already dkms-nvidia-current-470.103.01-1.mga8 and dkms-nvidia-current-510.68.02-1.mga8 (in backports)?
Thanks for checking up on a lot of old bugs, sturmvogel :) Yes lets close this - we have pushed several updates, but got no feedback. If same problem is found in our currently provided update or backport, please reopen.
