Description Dick Gevers 2011-09-29 20:06:40 CEST
Description of problem:

Normally I use GNOME with GDM and gnome-screensaver, but since various upgrades of both in combination with (otherwise well-working) systemd I decided to use xfce4 and kdm for now.

I use dkms-fglrx-8.881-1.mga2.nonfree and x11-driver-video-fglrx-8.881-1.mga2.nonfree to drive my AMD Radeon HD 6570

The evening before last, after upgrading my Cauldron box, I thought GDM was working okay and I also returned to gnome-screensaver, but stayed with xfce4 as I couldn't get proper appearance in GNOME yet.

My box kept running that night and all yesterday but returning yesterday evening to it, I found that GDM had become stuck at 03:09 hours a.m. - as shown on screen - and I could not log in. The running session was still xfce4 and it had continued running all the time, according to the logs.

Also I was unable to change to any tty (which I could all days before with kdm and xscreensaver).

So after a reset I found a kernel oops 'happened' at 03:09 a.m. last night, as attached.

Processor is an Intel i7 950.

Hmmm,
I'm not sure there is much we can do here as it's the fglrx driver that crashes:

Sep 28 03:09:16 dvg kernel: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000000000000008
Sep 28 03:09:16 dvg kernel: IP: [<ffffffffa0490251>] _ZN20CMMHeap_SystemMemory8pushPoolEP7CMMPool+0x11/0x40 [fglrx]

Has it happend more than once ?
Comment 9 Dick Gevers 2011-09-29 20:26:44 CEST
No because right after I stopped using gdm.

Curious is that I was using fglrx for months w/o any probs.

I can understand what you say, but should I report it anywhere else (upstream for gdm or fglrx ?)

Thanks.

I see catalyst (which is in fglrx-control-center-8.881-1.mga2.nonfree) is version 11.8, while AMD now has 11.9 since 28th September 2011 !

Please be so kind to package the new version from:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.42&lang=English

(I wouldn't ask for a package upgrade in Cauldron, except now that I had this kernel oops).

Thanks beforehand.
