Logged out and in again.  The desktop was restored in every detail.
Put mate-terminal through its paces although it is not specifically mentioned.
Raised a terminal from the panel icon then created another from the command line in that one and another using the file menu in the terminal, choosing a different profile.  From the cli ran this:
$ mate-terminal --working-directory /data/images
to create another starting in a different directory.  Changed profile on the fly and tried resizing from the terminal menu and by corner dragging.  Edited profile preferences, changing to transparent background and modifying the opacity.

Mate search tool from the System Tools menu.
Gui displayed - chose Music folder, search term wav.  Found subdirectory wav and 233 files in totum.

Used Appearance Preferences icon in panel to change the desktop theme.

mate-calc works - providing a basic calculator widget with advanced, financial and programming modes.

Tried out Mate Disk Usage Analyzer.  Works fine.

pluma works OK as a text editor.  mate-font-viewer displayed all the installed fonts.  thunar is not mentioned but it continues to work as expected.

All the functions of the eom image viewer work including showing animated gifs.

Used engrampa at the cli to extract all files in a tar file to a local directory.

mate-control-center is effectively the same as system settings manager AFAICS.

Removed an icon from the panel.  used the panel to establish a new panel on the right side of the screen.  Increased its width using settings.  Used "add to panel" to place an icon for a custom application launcher for a home-grown sudoku board display.  Clicked on the icon to bring up the board and load the last game played.

Used mate-control-center to change screensaver settings and tested these in due course.

No regressions noted over several hours.

Leaving validation to give other users opportunity to test.  Advisory in bug description (comment 0).
