Description Thomas Andrews 2021-04-03 23:52:05 CEST
Description of problem:
It seems that version 2.10.24 of The Gimp has been released, apparently with many bugfixes. See https://www.gimp.org/news/2021/03/29/gimp-2-10-24-released/

I think an update may be in order for Mageia 8, at least.
Comment 1 Lewis Smith 2021-04-04 19:53:02 CEST
Thanks for the prompt TJ.

Gimp has no fixed maintainer, so assigning this globally.

I was alerted by a popup in our Gimp that the update is available, including a prompt to download it. Users are going to see that, and at least some are sure to click on the link provided, possibly thinking the prompt came from us.

Wow. www.gimp.org will be permanently redirected to localhost on my systems
once the check for updates had been confirmed disabled in our version.
That is not behaviour that should be done by a graphics program.

Please test upcoming gimp-2.10.24-1.mga8 in Core/Updates_testing!

Check for updates is also disable now.

Preliminary check looks OK, but I need a package list to be sure.

Tried using qarepo. With no rpm list, I used "*gimp*" as a search term. That got me three packages, which installed without incident. But, when I went to run Gimp, it complained that it didn't have the correct GEGL library. (Seems to me that the update should not have been able to proceed without that library, but what do I know?)

Any way, I added "*gegl*" to the qarepo package list, and the result was this:

gegl-0.4.30-1.mga8.x86_64.rpm
gimp-2.10.24-1.mga8.x86_64.rpm
lib64gegl-devel-0.4.30-1.mga8.x86_64.rpm
lib64gegl-gir0.4-0.4.30-1.mga8.x86_64.rpm
lib64gegl0.4_0-0.4.30-1.mga8.x86_64.rpm
lib64gimp2.0-devel-2.10.24-1.mga8.x86_64.rpm
lib64gimp2.0_0-2.10.24-1.mga8.x86_64.rpm

the additional lib64gegl package updated without incident, after which gimp ran without complaint, and seemed to be OK. "Check for updates" is gone. I loaded a photo and played with several tools, all of which worked perfectly.

SO, it looks OK, but without a full rpm list, I can be sure I didn't miss something else.

Thanks David!

Perhaps http://madb.mageia.org/tools/listRpmsForQaBug/bugnum/28712/ is not fully listing the all rpms...

Sometimes it seems to take a while for that list to catch up, but it looks OK now. I checked for it before doing my very preliminary test, and there was nothing at all there at that time.

I will do my test again on another machine, this time with the full list.
Comment 11 Thomas Andrews 2021-04-18 00:56:54 CEST
i5 2500, Intel graphics, 64-bi9t Plasma system.

The following 4 packages are going to be installed:

- gimp-2.10.24-1.mga8.x86_64
- lib64babl0.1_0-0.1.86-1.mga8.x86_64
- lib64gegl0.4_0-0.4.30-1.mga8.x86_64
- lib64gimp2.0_0-2.10.24-1.mga8.x86_64

No installation issues. For a test, I loaded an image with over 70 layers, an aerial photo of a farm with overlays of planted areas, color-coded as to crop, with labels. A map like this is submitted to the USDA to report the crops planted that year on this farm.

I tried manipulating the image, drawing on it, using the paths tool to make a selection, used the bucket fill and erase tool. Tried the color picker tools, and "fuzzy select." Tried the smudge tool. Exported the image as a .jpg.

Everything worked, and "check for updates" is no longer there. Looks OK for 64-bits.

Comment 12 Thomas Andrews 2021-04-18 01:32:17 CEST
Forgot to mention, in the test of Comment 11, I also used the "Undo" function several times, and used the xsane plugin to scan an image into Gimp.

Dell Inspiron 5100, P4, Radeon rv200 graphics, 32-bit Xfce system:

Ran Gimp, and it immediately told me there is an update available. Didn't do anything else, just closed it again. Updated the i586 versions of the same packages as in Comment 11, no installation issues.

Ran Gimp again, edited preferences to get rid of the ugly default background and icon themes. Because this machine doesn't have much RAM, I used a digital photo as a test image this time. Tried several tools, not as many as in Comment 11, but enough to show that it's working.

Calling this OK for 32-bits, and validating.
