Description of problem: alt + F2 was one of the first things that I learned about LINUX some twenty years ago and one of the most useful. In past versions of Mageia this shortcut has always led to krunner (or its previous incarnation). When, for unknown reasons, it did not work in Mageia 8, I finally found that alt + F2 was assigned to "run" (whose function is unbeknown to me). I suspect that other Mageiaphiles will also be wondering and so I suggest that you change the default application for alt + F2 to krunner Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): How reproducible: go: alt + F2 Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.

Are you using KDE/Plasma exclusively? What advantage does it have over the menu item (where it exists) 'Run' (specified program)? What is the difference between 'krunner' & 'run'? I need to explore this under Plasma (& M7) to appreciate the differences. Trying this under M8/Mate pops a Mate 'run program' dialogue for choosing the application and a file to give it. So the same functionality is there. Will be back.

Created attachment 12496 [details] the command "run" does not seem to exist
Hello Lewis I use KDE/PLASMA exclusively. Since my MANDRAKE days ALT + F2 has always opened a little command line window. It is particularly efficient when taking a series of snapshots (via imagemagick) with only the ordinal identification numbers changing. As you can seen from the attached snapshots. The command (?) "run" does not seem to exist. This is not a critical "bug" and so I labled it "minor". Rather, since nothing happened when I went ALT + F2, I assumed that others would also be wondering. Roger

It's working on my Mageia 8 x86-64 install. $ env|grep DESKTOP DESKTOP_SESSION=/usr/share/xsessions/01plasma XDG_SESSION_DESKTOP=KDE XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=KDE Checking systemsettings5, under Workspace, Shortcuts, krunner includes as a default settings for krunner, alt+space, Search, and alt+F2. Those are settings I've never looked at before let alone changed.

Well, I have at last poked this under Plasma on both M7 & M8 - and find them the same: Alt/F2 Pops a small long (presume command line) window at the top of the screen shown 'search'. I know this is krunner. If you type something it finds, it offers to run it (exactly like the bottom menu item 'search'). On M7 it has an icon at the LH side saying 'configure', which leads to a window of Plasma plugins (all ticked); meaningless to me. On M8 it has a double icon on the LH side whose hover caption is illegible, but I think says also 'configure krunner'. Clicking it pops variably a large window titled either 'Krunner' or 'Krunner - system settings'. Like Dave, I have never been here before, not touched anything. The Alt/F2 behaviour here has not changed from M7. RUN My mistake, I was not under Plasma. What a lot of time you spent showing it was not there. I was thinking of the bottom thing in the menu, which - like krunner - is actually called 'search' (which leads to Run). Sorry for the confusion. (Some other desktops do have a 'run' menu entry). So rather than screenshots showing that 'run' does not exist - which you could have simply said - please attach what you *do* get with Alt/F2 (I shall attach what I see: krunner).
Created attachment 12498 [details] Showing krunner popup on Mageia 8 under Plasma Mageia 7 is just the same (different LH icon), and the two do the same sort of thing.
I was struck by a similar problem after an upgrade from Mageia 7. Had to modify ~/.config/kglobalshortcutsrc file by hand as per this thread: https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=164820 Other methods didn't work for me, including those, mentioned in an upstream bug report: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=413368

Is this problem repeatable on upgrade? If so it deserves a mention in Errata upgrade issues, and link to that manual fix. (And of course if we can avoid by some update...)
(In reply to roger herz-fischler from comment #4) > Created attachment 12497 [details] > also showing a use of krunner and imagemacick This krunner image is the same as my own screenshot of it - got by Alt/F2. This is the first mention of 'upgrade'. @Roger: can you say whether your system is a new install, or upgrade from M7. How did *you* Alexander see 'the problem'? We still do not know what it is, even if you do. Is it this, from comment 8: "If I press Alt+F2 keyboard shortcut does nothing". "krunner shortcut alt-f2 that I'd been used-to forever no longer worked" But from comment 0: 'I finally found that alt + F2 was assigned to "run"' so how did this manifest itself?

This is totally strange that we are now seeing such things: past/already set shortcuts in Mageia 7 seem to not be carried to Mageia 8. We did see this with "Print Screen"--key no longer assigned to Spectacle (Plasma screenshots maker). Between Mageia 7 and Mageia 8, Plasma has been updated from 5.15 to 5.20 version. In this version, the shortcuts panel in Systemsettings5 was rewritten from scratch and normally, settings *should* be saved. Krunner was bind to alt+F2 in M7 and also in M8. I don't know what is wrong now.
Simply put, both Alt+F2 and Alt+Space combinations are shortcuts for the execution of 'krunner' program as mentioned above by Aurelien. It was always the case since KDE3 env at least. Quite a convenient and addicting tool, IMO. Finding out that familiar shortcuts are no longer working is a bit irritating. In my case, they stopped working after the 'upgrade'. Running 'krunner' from the terminal works as it should, but pressing either Alt+F2 or Alt+Space combination does nothing at all despite that 'systemsettings5' has all previous key bindings in place as well as including the 'new' ones under a different category. By 'new' ones I mean the same Alt+F2 and Alt+Space key bindings. If I'll manage to reproduce this problem in Vbox I'll post a screenshot which, hopefully, explains better what I've meant above.

I do not think now a screenshot helps in your case: "does nothing at all" is clear enough, like in the two references you gave. We must have an answer from Roger re: - whatever you mean exactly by: alt + F2 was assigned to "run" - whether you see the problem on a new M8 install, or post-upgrade M7-8. bearing in mind that both Dave & I (+ Aurélien?) see normal behaviour; then it can be assigned to KDE team.
Created attachment 12519 [details] system---> shortcuts --->krunner This is in reply to comment 6 by Lewis. I was not clear enough Originally when I made the automatic gest ALT + F2 absolutely nothing happened so there was nothing to show. Eventually I looked under shortcuts an saw that ALT+ F2 was assigned to something called "run", but as I said nothing happened. So I wondered if this were not a pre-command e.g. "run octave", but as my snapshot of konsole showed there is no instrinsic function called "run". [I do not understand the command "run command on clipboard contents" that appears next to "run"]. So I first changed the shortcut for "run" to "none" and then made ALT+F2 the short cut for "krunner" which is how I took the picture in Konsole. ALT+F2 was indeed the command for krunne in Mageia 6. I had Mageia 7 for a short while, but the plasma freeze caused me to go back to 6

Created attachment 12520 [details] krunner + run set to defaults
comment 15 the text disappeared. I wanted to take a picture of shortcuts krunner as it originally appeared so I clicked on defaults. As the attachment shows ALT + F2 appears as being assigned to krunner.
Created attachment 12521 [details] "run" appears under both "kruner" and "run command" I just noticed this; see the attached photograph which combines snapshots of "krunner" and "run". Maybe this is the cause of the confusion. As I indicated I tried to reset all the values unde shortcuts, but did not obtain the original configuration. I do not have another computer to test a fresh version of Mageia 8, but there must be many Mageiarites who have not changed the configuration so that this can be checked.
Created attachment 12530 [details] automatic krunner summons On 64-bit MGA8, upgraded via urpmi from up-to-date MGA7, I've got the Alt-F2 and, once I was aware of it, Alt-Space doing nothing syndrome. I regularly use Alt-F2 and have been forever a user of KDE ---> Plasma5 desktop on my main desktop machine exclusively. I intended to open konsole to run a command and so switched to an empty virtual desktop. As sometimes happens, I started typing the command before opening konsole. As I typed, what looked like the Alt-F2 box opened up on the desktop, echoing my keystrokes. The command was 'urpmq -i nis' and this dialog suggested 'Command line Run urpmq -i nis' as in attached screenie. Pressing Enter closed the dialog and nothing happens. However, there is a terminal icon button to the right of the box, mouse-over 'Run in Terminal Window (Shift + Return' that, when clicked, opens konsole and runs the command. I found that typing a gui program name, such as firefox, displayed suggested search matches from which Firefox Web Browser could be clicked, starting the browser. I checked with a MGA7 plasma5 desktop and found the same behavior. Just typing gives a search box from which programs could be started. Alt-F2 gives the same thing on that machine. This looks to me like the same dialog as when 'krunner' is invoked from konsole. I did not notice this before.
Roger In spite of your many comments, you have still not said whether this problem appeared: * after an upgrade from M7 to M8 (like Alexander & Rolf) OR * on a new Mageia 8 install. Assigning to KDE team anyway, since we now know that the problem is "Alt/F2 does nothing, rather than raising krunner".

Hello Lewis I suppose that I was not clear enough in my comment 14 where I wrote: "ALT+F2 was indeed the command for krunne in Mageia 6. I had Mageia 7 for a short while, but the plasma freeze caused me to go back to 6" I had Mageia 6 (not 7) on my computer and when Mageia 8 came out I did---as always---a complete new install so that / (but not /home) was formatted with Mageia 6 being replaced by Mageia 8
Comment 20 could be considered as upgrade as well, since ~/.config directory already had populated kglobalshortcutsrc file. I had an experiment with VBox last weekend, below is the summary of it: 1. Issue is 100% repeatable during upgrade. 2. Clean mga7 ~/.config/kglobalshortcutsrc file's 'krunner' section looks like this: [krunner] _k_friendly_name=Run Command run command=Alt+Space\tAlt+F2\tSearch,Alt+Space,Run Command run command on clipboard contents=Alt+Shift+F2,Alt+Shift+F2,Run Command on clipboard contents Clean mga8 ~/.config/kglobalshortcutsrc file's 'krunner' section looks like this: [krunner.desktop] RunClipboard=Alt+Shift+F2,Alt+Shift+F2,Run command on clipboard contents k_friendly_name=KRunner _launch=Alt+Space\tAlt+F2\tSearch,Alt+Space\tAlt+F2\tSearch,KRunner After upgrade process mga7 -> mga8, ~/.config/kglobalshortcutsrc file's 'krunner' section looks like this (note two entries): [krunner] _k_friendly_name=Run Command run command=Alt+Space\tAlt+F2\tSearch,Alt+Space,Run Command run command on clipboard contents=Alt+Shift+F2,Alt+Shift+F2,Run Command on clipboard contents [krunner.desktop] RunClipboard=Alt+Shift+F2,Run command on clipboard contents k_friendly_name=KRunner _launch=\t\t,Alt+Space\tAlt+F2\tSearch,KRunner 3. Issue disappears after manually executing /usr/lib64/kconf_update_bin/krunnerglobalshortcuts with current user permissions and following after login off & login on process into Plasma. The ~/.config/kglobalshortcutsrc file's 'krunner' section becomes as per 'clean mga8' entry above.
My Comment 21 has some typos. All 'k_friendly_name' parameters should be '_k_friendly_name' of course, sorry about that. So the end result is as follows: Clean mga7 ~/.config/kglobalshortcutsrc file's 'krunner' section looks like this: [krunner] _k_friendly_name=Run Command run command=Alt+Space\tAlt+F2\tSearch,Alt+Space,Run Command run command on clipboard contents=Alt+Shift+F2,Alt+Shift+F2,Run Command on clipboard contents Clean mga8 ~/.config/kglobalshortcutsrc file's 'krunner' section looks like this: [krunner.desktop] RunClipboard=Alt+Shift+F2,Alt+Shift+F2,Run command on clipboard contents _k_friendly_name=KRunner _launch=Alt+Space\tAlt+F2\tSearch,Alt+Space\tAlt+F2\tSearch,KRunner After upgrade process mga7 -> mga8, ~/.config/kglobalshortcutsrc file's 'krunner' section looks like this (note two entries): [krunner] _k_friendly_name=Run Command run command=Alt+Space\tAlt+F2\tSearch,Alt+Space,Run Command run command on clipboard contents=Alt+Shift+F2,Alt+Shift+F2,Run Command on clipboard contents [krunner.desktop] RunClipboard=Alt+Shift+F2,Run command on clipboard contents _k_friendly_name=KRunner _launch=\t\t,Alt+Space\tAlt+F2\tSearch,KRunner
I am hit too after upgrade from mga7. On both systems I upgraded. I believe this is trigged by keeping /home from mga7, regardless if system is upgraded or installed fresh. I believe this is caused by plasma version incompatible configuration, like Bug 27183 - Default Mageia spectacle integration settings missing in plasma5 systemsettings. Here I could fix it by in the shortcut for "Run program" checking [X] Alt+F2 Which was non checked! But weird: I had to do it twice: Maybe because first time i launched systemsettings5 prefixed by "LC_ALL=C" in an attempt to get better screenshot, partially translated. After Apply and closing systemsettings5 Alt+F2 still did not work, and when i launched systemsettings5 again (without "LC_ALL=C" this time) the setting was again not selected. After i checked it, Apply, and it worked. So if it don't work first time, try again. On the first system i massaged, I instead started by deselecting every shortcut for "launch command", Apply, and then the above seem to have worked, but i also tried other things so not sure what worked. This is not minor, and probably hit *all* users upgrading, plus them installing fresh with old /home.

Created attachment 12594 [details] Systemsettings > Shortcuts > System > krunner I've got a slightly different arrangement in Shortcuts -> System Services see attached screenie. Still, typing in an empty virtual desktop invokes what Alt-F2 did/does in MGA 7. Here, Alt+F2 was bound to Run Command after upgrading to MGA 8 and did nothing, as does Alt+Space, as some of us are reporting. Under the KRunner shortcut, Default shortcuts listed are Search, Alt+F2, and Alt+Space, as screenie shows. Initially, none of these boxes were checked. I checked to use Alt+F2, as shown, as was presented with a message that Run was already assigned to this. I ok'ed the change and, now, Alt+F2 delivers the familiar dialog to run a command in cli, open program, search for file. As in my report for MGA 7 in #18, typing in an empty virtual desktop, pressing Alt+F2 (now), or invoking krunner from CLI all produce this dialog.
(In reply to Rolf Pedersen from comment #26) > I've got a slightly different arrangement in Shortcuts -> System Services > see attached screenie. Thanks. Ah it is "KRunner" in english. Weird. I adjusted Errata now. > Still, typing in an empty virtual desktop invokes what Alt-F2 did/does Actually, it works also when there are windows as long as they are not selected; I.e click the desktop -> desktop menu shows, click again or hit ESC and type :) > Alt+F2 was bound to Run Command after upgrading to MGA 8 and > did nothing, as does Alt+Space, as some of us are reporting. Was same here. Thanks for confirmation.
Is this also valid in MGA9 or why did this land in MGA9 Errata?
removed from mga9 errata.
