Hi, thaks reporting this. Did you perform an upgrade from Mageia 7? Why changing sddm to xdm? This old ATI Radeon X1200 card is no longer supported by ATI/AMD proprietary driver (fglrx). XFDrake should propose you the best usable alternative, radeon driver. Try VESA or even fbdev with no 3D acceleration. This not an future-proof usable situation.

Can you provide the Kernel in use? $ uname -r
Component: Release (media or process) => RPM Packages
Status: NEW => NEEDINFO
Did you perform an upgrade from Mageia 7? Yes Why changing sddm to xdm? To avoid sddm crashs instead of kwin uname -r 5.10.20-desktop-2.mga8
- "This old ATI Radeon X1200 card is no longer supported by ATI/AMD proprietary driver (fglrx)." The installer, for graphical card/X server choice, offers Vendor=ATI, Radeon HD 4870 and earlier. It should not offer this, but vesa or radeon. - "XFDrake should propose you the best usable alternative, radeon driver." I dont found. Where is it? Under which Vendor? Elsewhere, I dont found "radeon" driver package with Rpmdrake. - "Try VESA or even fbdev with no 3D acceleration." Vesa driver avoid crash of sddm and kwin. I can graphical use Mageia 8. But the display is too narrow (1280x1024 insteed of 1920x1080).
Thanks answering this. XFDrake is our tool under Mageia Control Centre, in Hardware section. The name is "Set up the graphical server". Your card should fit the Vendor=ATI, Radeon HD 4870 and earlier chosen by DrakX, the installer. This is handled by radeon module from Linux Kernel, there is nothing else to install. As you get wrong display output sddm crashes and kwin_X11 segfaults, with this driver, Assigning to Kernel and Drivers maintainers. Can you, from a working situation show us the output of $ lspcidrake -v please?
