Description Maat 2021-02-23 11:33:13 CET
Description of problem:

modprobe ec_sys results in this error :

modprobe: FATAL: Module ec_sys not found in directory /lib/modules/5.10.16-desktop-1.mga8

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

kernel-5.10.16-1.mga8.src.rpm

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1. log in as root
2. type modprobe ec_sys
3. see the error message

This is problematic as this module is currently the only way to control the fan speed on a lot of MSI laptops

See here for more details : https://github.com/YoyPa/isw

By the way packaging this isw tool could be nice to allow mageia users to use MSI laptops

ok, will enable in next kernel build
Comment 2 Morgan Leijström 2021-02-23 12:32:06 CET
For errata?

What is the effect: Does it cause computer to make much noise, or get too little cooling?

Comment 3 Thomas Backlund 2021-02-23 13:10:05 CET
No.
not everything reported in bugzilla or discussed om mls belongs in errata

for stuff that has never been supported, it cant possible be a regression.
Comment 4 Morgan Leijström 2021-02-23 13:34:08 CET
Oh, i did not realise it was an enhancement request
Comment 5 Maat 2021-02-23 17:57:58 CET
Hello,

Thanks a lot Thomas.

@Morgan: Indeed it's not a regression.

The problem is that the fan starts turning very fast soon after the boot and never slows down even if the computer becomes idle. Very noisy result and it reduces noticeably the lifetime of the fan (at least). It also sucks down a lot of battery life.
With this module enabled the fan can be controlled and slowed down to more reasonable speeds.

My bad I could have made it more clear that it was not a regression.

Will try to do better for the next bugs i create.

Maât
