Description Michel AUTEM 2020-11-16 17:53:18 CET
Description of problem:
- The desktop icons is more or less disorganized when I shutdown my computer, or simply when I close/reopen the session.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
- Xfc-session - v. 4.15.1 - rev. 1.mga8 (? I'm not sure where the problem comes from ..)

How reproducible:
- Seemingly random : nothing is random in computers, but I'm unable to make the link with anything else I handle.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create some disposal of you desktop icons
2. Close/reopen you session, or reboot the system.
3. Once or twice out of five, everything is moved in any way, often packed on the left.

It's super boring having to put everything back in place every time. This problem in Xfce seems to have been going on for YEARS ...

Thanks.

Well, I have just tried this without reproducing your problem.
xfce4-session-4.15.1-1.mga8

I scattered the desktop icons (but *not* the 'other partition' ones, which might get created dynamically), normally aligned on the left, across the desktop.

Logout/Login: they stayed where they were moved to.
Re-start X [Ctrl/Alt/Bksp/Bksp]: they stayed where they were moved to.
Re-boot: they stayed where they were moved to.
But I have yet to reach 5 new sessions!
> Once or twice out of five
Can you please attach screenshots:
- after you have moved icons on the desktop
- after a new session, showing their confusion. And say how many new sessions were needed to see the mess.

CC'ing Jani for Xfce4, & possibly advice.

Thank you for these screenshots - worth a thousand words.
[J'aime le Brassens].

Approximately how many new sessions were there before the desktop got re-organised?
The 'mess' is not at all that; the icons have been tidied to the the left.

Assigning this to Jani (removed CC) for Xfce4.

Comment 5 Michel AUTEM 2020-11-18 21:40:28 CET
Hi Lewis,
Obviously, I observed nothing more since my ticket .. In fact, for now Xfce is stable.

The problem looks like what happens when the file storing the desktop arrangement ("$HOME/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons.screen0-**.rc", where ** is your screen resolution) is deleted, excepted that all desktop elements are not always concerned : sometimes yes, some othertimes no (the basket in my screen shots, or some othertimes, and randomly, a couple of other icons ..). It's more like the "rc" file was not deleted, but only partially written or erased.

The simple bypass I found is simply to create a script which automatically backups the "rc" file when I logout my Xfce session or shutdown the computer. It's then easy to recover the desktop the next time when I see that something got wrong. And it will allow to compare the "rc" file after an accident, with its version before, at least if I can induce the problem again ..

For now I gonna see what happens with a power shortage, or a hard shutdown (by pressing the computer button).

I will give news as soon as I can observe something again ..

Rgds

Comment 7 Michel AUTEM 2020-11-20 08:30:34 CET
Hi folks,
It made it again this morning when I switched on the computer (see new attachment).

**Note that all icons are not moved.**
On Wednesday, I tried different power shortages and hard shutdown, but nothing did move ..

Yesterday I worked quietly as usual, I left Xfce and shutdown the computer properly, and this morning everything is upside down one more time ..

Luckily, now I get an automatic backup of the "icons.screen0-**.rc" file, in such a way I can restore my desktop in a click (plus a disconnection/reconnection) .. According its timestamp, my "rc" file had been rewritten somewhere during the system boot, i.e. before I do myself anything by hand in the interface.

Rgds.

I think it would be better to report this directly to upstream, against xfdesktop.

https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfdesktop/-/issues

There has been discussions and bug reports about rearranging icons in Xfce as long as I can remember.

Thanks Jani for explaning the situation.
"There has been discussions and bug reports about rearranging icons in Xfce as long as I can remember" is significant.

@Michel
It may be related to the large number of desktop icons you have. No-one else has raised this here.

Please do as Jani suggested, and put the URL for your bug in the URL field above.
Mention "According its timestamp, my "rc" file had been rewritten somewhere during the system boot, i.e. before I do myself anything by hand in the interface"; and this bug.

If it even gets fixed upstream, report back here.

Today (2021-07-03), this Cauldron erratic bug seems completely disappeared in Mageia 8. At least I didn't meet it anymore since last year ...
I guess you should close this ticket.
Comment 14 Aurelien Oudelet 2021-07-04 23:37:29 CEST
Doing so.

Thanks feedback.
