Details

Description Markus Robert Keßler 2020-10-10 22:17:11 CEST
Description of problem:

VMPK exits without warning. After start the splash screen just flashes up and then the app terminates without warning / error alert.
Hence, the package is not usable.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

0.7.1-2

How reproducible:

Always, on "Mageia release 7 (Official) for x86_64"

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start virtual midi piano keyboard via shell or start menu
2. Watch how greeting screen flashes once and the programm exits ("exited with 1" according to strace)
3.
Comment 1 Dave Hodgins 2020-10-11 00:21:19 CEST
I cannot test the package as I do not have the necessary hardware.

What type of MIDI synthesizer do you have, and is the system set up to use the
jack audio driver?

Comment 2 Markus Robert Keßler 2020-10-11 11:33:13 CEST
Hi,

currently I do not use any hardware synthesizer.

I use this tool for sending program changes to, for example, fluid synth. I.e., switch from Stage piano to Strings pad etc.
On Mageia 6 this was no problem at all, but in MGA7x64 the program refuses to start. Though all libraries like drumstick are present, only the greeting screen flashes up for less than one second and that's it.
Comment 3 Lewis Smith 2020-10-11 11:38:44 CEST
Thank you for reporting this.

@ Dave : You do not need any special hardware to see the fault. I just installed & tried it: vmpk-0.7.1-2.mga7 (MGA7 Xfce), and it does exactly what is described. Shall attach strace. Could it do this *because* there is no special hardware.

Assigning to Rémi, the registered maintainer, CC'ing DavidG who has touched it before.

The trace is compressed with xz.

Blast! I sent the previous attachment as 'text' when it was not...

Attachment 11922 is obsolete: 0 => 1

Comment 6 Markus Robert Keßler 2020-10-17 14:39:26 CEST
Workaround in the meantime if used to send midi messages to midi devices:
install vkeybd -- this one can be even started multiple times and each one instance can be connected separately with any synth, sampler etc. in qjackctl

Any update so far?
Comment 8 Sébastien Morin 2021-03-21 08:35:13 CET
This bug is still valid in Mageia 8:

$ vmpk
Failure loading widgets library translations for "fr_FR" from "/usr/bin/../share/drumstick/"
Default MIDI IN driver "Network" not found
Default MIDI OUT driver "SonivoxEAS" not found
Unable to initialize all MIDI drivers. Terminating.

$ rpm -qa | grep vmpk
vmpk-0.8.0-1.mga8

$ uname -romi

Mageia 7 is EOL since July 1st 2021.
There will not have any further bugfix for this release.

You are encouraged to upgrade to Mageia 8 as soon as possible.

@reporter, if this bug still apply with Mageia 8, please let us know it.

@packager, if you work on the Mageia 7 version of your package, please check the Mageia 8 package if issue is also present. In this case, please fix the Mageia 8 version instead.

This bug report will be closed OLD if there is no further notice within 1st September 2021.

Hi bug reporter and hi assignee and others involved,

Please reopen this bug report if it is still valid for Mageia 8 or 9(cauldron), and change "Version:" in the upper left of this report accordingly.

This report is being closed as OLD because it was filed against Mageia 7, for which support ended on June 30th 2021.

Thanks,
Marja
