Basically the GUI flashes on screen briefly and then it immediately crashes. As far as reproducing I'm not sure exactly what I did to make it start being crashy. Flatpak seems to work fine so far. Happy to provide any other logs/backtraces/etc. if needed, just let me know what you need and how to do it.
I just installed gnome-boxes, and it's working for me. Just had it install a Mageia 8 beta 1 Live Plasma X86_64 iso on a Mageia 7 x86_64 host. Other then increasing the ram for the guest from 2 to 4 GB (I have 16GB on the host), for everything else I accepted the defaults. Didn't install updates, just shut down the guest after it rebooted into the installed system. After that ... $ ll -h /home/dave/.local/share/gnome-boxes/images total 7.3G -rwxr--r-- 1 dave dave 7.3G Oct 5 21:42 boxes-unknown*

I had run a couple of VMs fine the other day, then deleted them. (A Mageia 8 beta and Fedora 33 beta guest). Come to think of it it seemed like they didn't both want to run at the same time and one was pausing. After that I let the laptop suspend over night, and then when I started to create a new VM today it crashed, and then has been crashing ever since immediately on startup, even after a reboot. If it would help I can try testing on a fresh user account next time I have a minute.
Would it be worth trying also UNinstalling and re-installing the package (with # urpme --auto-orphans # urpmi --clean [to clear the local rpm cache] in between?) This is not the ideal answer, but worth a stab to see whether the problem re-surfaces. > I had run a couple of VMs fine the other day Also, once re-installed, please pursue this line to see whether it has a bearing: happens after running just one VM, or only after more.

Clean reinstall did not fix the crash. I created a new user and it started right up, so it would seem to be something in the user folder. I tried creating a VM on the new user and as soon as I clicked the very last "create" button on the dialog, it crashed with the same error. I attempted to delete everything related to either gnome-boxes or libvirt under ~/.local/share, ~/.cache, and ~/.config and none of it fixed the issue, either one at a time or deleting everything at once. It seems like there is a few processes relating to libvirt and qemu still running after the crash. Killing them didn't affect anything either. Tried testing different guest ISOs too on yet another new user and it didn't matter what the guest was. So...hopefully that helps. I'm confused.
Does the cpu support virtualization? https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/getting-started-with-virtualization/index.html I vaguely recall their being bios settings that have to be enabled on some systems, but do not remember what they were called. In the bios setup for that system, look for anything that seems to be related to virtualization and ensure it's enabled.
Flags in /proc/cpuinfo are there so I should be good. And I have had it successfully work on some other distros, and of course the Flatpak works fine.
(In reply to Dan Robinson from comment #6) > Flags in /proc/cpuinfo are there so I should be good. And I have had it > successfully work on some other distros, and of course the Flatpak works > fine. Hi, these are arguments from authority. I really would like to trust you, but, sorry, without providing screenshot or the full /proc/cpuinfo here to help you, I will not. Please provide /proc/cpuinfo here. In facts, if GNOME Boxes from flatpak runs fine and not our Mageia 7 version from RPM package, it's a mess, but David W. Hodgins, good sysadmin from us, has a working version form our RPM packages, perhaps his system has an installed missing dependency that you, Dan, can't have installed because missing. So, who is right here? On M7 and Cauldron, "urpmi gnome-boxes" suffices to itself, what RPM does it pull? # urpmi gnome-boxes Pour satisfaire les dépendances, les paquetages suivants vont être installés : Paquetage Version (In reply to Aurelien Oudelet from comment #7) > Above is on a M7 32 bits system. Note that while the packages are available on the 32 bit repositories, as our build system generates for all architectures, any virtual machine type of packaging is not tested on or expected to work on a 32 bit host system. gnome boxes on a 64 bit host can run either 32 or 64 bit guests.

Proceed with the installation of the 128 packages? (Y/n) I don't have time at the moment to actually spin up boxes and try to do anymore testing but here's the info requested.
Okay, I actually had a little extra time, so I installed it, and tried to boot up a VM with a Debian net-inst ISO (because it was fast to download). And it seemed to work just fine now. I should note all of the above is on a clean install, so maybe the issue I was having is something that I did. Unfortunately I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to find out what that is that I did, so maybe we want to just close this as not being reproducible?
Has Virtualization Technology been enabled in the setup? https://www.hackingloops.com/how-to-enable-virtual-machine-on-i3-i5-or-i7-processors-virtualization-concept/
Oops. I added comment 11 after reading comment 9 on the ml, and didn't notice comment 10. Closing the bug as invalid unless info on the cause can be found.
