Description of problem: Today, mgaapplet has a non-user-friendly name in systray: "mgaapplet". Why not "Mageia System Update" and should be translatable?
Created attachment 11736 [details] mgaapplet current name Could mgaapplet have a pretty name more user friendly?

Indeed this could be useful and pretty much better.

mgaapplet is enshrined in diverse places like Wikis. Other distributions have cryptic names for their equivalent applications. The need to translate a clearer name is an important issue. I suggest putting this issue to a Mageia forum to test users' reactions. If you do, please note the thread here. Assigning to the mageiatools group.

Created attachment 11946 [details] mgaapplet in Plasma 5.20 With recently updated Plasma 5.20, notification area has been overhauled. Instead of a list, we get a grid view. See attached screenshot. I do think that we should rename it. For translations, we could simply name it "Mageia Updates" in English and for French : "Mises à jour de Mageia". Here is a MLO forum page: https://www.mageialinux-online.org/forum/topic.php?id=27903&r=1&pt=1

Not for Mageia 8? I know this is late, but reported in July 2020. Also, there was a survey on MLO forum. I don't know if feasible, doable, but, ping Thierry, Martin and David Hodgins for advice.

I agree with comment 4 I remember myself not knowing it was the same in the beginning; Package mgaonline, displaying name "mgaapplet". IF it need to be a short name somewhere (to be specific, nontranslated) why not "mgaonline"? Both are unique enough that a search-replace procedure can update documentation.

How about changing it to "mgaupdtchk" for Mageia update checker.
Just occurred to me though, that if it's name is changed, it should add startup code such that if ~/.MgaOnline/mgaonline exists, it should be moved to ~/.config/Mageia/mgaupdtchk.conf and changed to look for that file for config options, to be more consistent with other user level Mageia tools such as Mageiawelcome and mageiaSync.
(In reply to Dave Hodgins from comment #7) > How about changing it to "mgaupdtchk" for Mageia update checker. How is this clearer? Renaming a cryptic mgaapplet name to an even more cryptic mgaupdtchk name does not help.
Mageia update checker makes the purpose of the applet clear. mgaapplet only indicates the applet has something to do with Mageia.
I do think the icon in Plasma systray should have a name like "Mageia Online".
