Description of problem:

New user ; virtual console login ; "startx starticewm -- :1" ; Logout ; results in a black nonresponsive screen. If I switch to a different VC using Ctrl+alt+F1 / etc. and back I see the prompt again.

Sorry to have left this so long, Shlomi.
There is an implication that you boot to a console.

Believing your designation of xinit as the culprit, CC'ing ChrisD for that. But that SRPM is variously maintained, so assigning the bug to all packagers.

Confirmed here as well with:
startx fvwm2

I'll investigate, but that could be kernel mode setting related too, I am seeing it with nouveau while you have it with intel.
