The stick was mounted correctly and I could read the file. Finally reformatted the stick to vfat. All worked OK.

Aha! Thank you for the quick reply. I first thought missing lib was the reason gparted show greyed out exfat option for formatting, but now i learned gparted have due to patents chosen to not be able to do much with exfat.
