OK initiated a reboot and a rebuild of nvidia-current. Desktop applications working fine. All stress tests completed. Launched a Mageia 7 client in virtualbox. It all looks good - leaving it running as production desktop for a while.

Continuation from comment 1. Switched back to Mate for the QA meeting. Had trouble logging out of Plasma - three attempts - no idea what was wrong.
Switched back to the desktop kernel after several days of successful production with the linus kernel. So now nvidia is back.
