Description Sébastien B. 2020-05-20 11:23:43 CEST
Description of problem:
Hello
As you can see in the image below, when I use the classic installation media, after pressing F2 and launching the installation, I have this image that appears .... No other possibility than to restart the installation.

Besides, the installer has planted several times, but that is not yet the subject.

This image also appears when the distribution starts, just after selecting mageia in the grub menu, then the system launches.

I do not modify my Grub excessively, only the splash quiet option is deleted, because I see myself what happens when I start my machine ...

I searched the Bugzilla, maybe wrong, but I don't think I find a bug related to this graphic problem?

Once the distribution is installed, this "graphics bug" is still present.

I made a video (excuse the poor quality) showing you the phenomenon when starting my machine.

SB.

Sorry for this problem. Several questions...
I could not view the video whose link you give. Can you give its format?

The spurious image is French, is your system?
You say you have no choice once the image shows but to re-start the installation. Does this mean the image sticks and you can do nothing else?
How did you get round this to continue the installation?

You also say that it appears during normal system boot, just after selecting an entry from the Grub menu; but carries on to boot normally.
How long does it show for?
And what happens if you restore the 'splash quiet' option (you can always use Esc to see the boot messages). Does the normal Mageia screen show instead?

Is the behaviour the same whether you manually select an entry from the Grub menu (try selecting a different one from normal), or whether it automatically boots the pre-selected entry?

Can you say something about your system. And the installation media you used (DVD|USB).

@Cyril : Are you seeing it too?

Thank you for your quick reply.

The video format is .MP4.
I can read it with VLC present in Mageia's tainted repositories.

Yes I use a French language system, that's correct.

In advance I apologize if the translation tools do not offer adequate work.

Yes, as you indicate, during installation, it "freeze" when this image appears, no more actions are possible.

I had to restart the installation process several times before it could continue.

When starting, actually this "glitch" (if we can call it that), appears stealthily, one second at most, and does not slow down the starting of the machine.
I did not try to reset the splash quiet option. I will try once this answer is given. I would also try another grub entry.

I do not use UEFI, my partitions are therefore msdos.
A root partition, one for the home, and one for the swap.

My system consists of:

i7 4790 haswell family
Graphic: Intel HD4600
motherboard: Asrock H81M-DGS R2.0 Bios in the latest version available 1.60 from 07/31/2015
SSD for the system and two other retro-magnetic disks for data storage.

I used the classic installation media, on a usb key formatted by Gparted in fat 32, and restored the disk image with the gnome disk utility tool.

I just tried to add the slash quiet option, and the problem disappears.
I withdraw the option, the problem returns.

I don't have that bug. But Sébastien post his problem first on Mageia Linux Online forum in French. We don't find any solution but we have ruled out any problem with burning the iso on the flash drive. So I want to follow the resolution of this bug to continue the process we started on the french forum.

@Sebastien
Thank you for the extra information.
> The video format is .MP4.
> I can read it with VLC present in Mageia's tainted repositories.
I could not make it work, tried VLC to start with.

Comment 4 looks a good pointer. It was tempting to think this problem appears for you - apparently *just* you - because of changing something; except it blocked the installation.

Assigning to tv re Grub2 for his view, CC'ing Martin.

@Cyril : Je connais ce forum.

The video is not very important, it showed the boot sequence.
the passage of the bios, the choice of mageia in the Grub menu, and the famous "artefacts / glitch" ... :)

I don't think that's a grub2 issue as we saw the kernel messages popping up.
I would vote for a fb bug within the kernel

Do you have a vga= option on your boot command line? If yes, try removing it.

Thank you Thierry & Martin. The bug is in good hands, I can do nothing more, so retire.

Hi bug reporter and hi assignee and others involved,

Please reopen this bug report if it is still valid for Mageia 8 or 9(cauldron), and change "Version:" in the upper left of this report accordingly.

This report is being closed as OLD because it was filed against Mageia 7, for which support ended on June 30th 2021.

Thanks,
Marja
