Description of problem: If you install without X, deselecting all graphical environments, it gives you an extra window where it asks if you want use X or not. if you don't use X, you still get a desktop kernel. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): How reproducible: Steps to Reproduce: 1. install using dual iso, deselect every checkbox 2. in next screen keep X off and urpmi on, then proceed with installation 3. you have desktop-latest kernel installed. tested in a VM
Yes an ? What should be installed instead?

heh, yes, forgot to say it should be kernel-server-latest ...
I am not sure that it is the package list who chooce the good kernel but rather the hardware detect. (or something like that)

well, likely, but it may be a good idea to have some categories influence those decisions?
Well, the installer tries to detect server hw (specific details such as rack, manufacturer, ...), and installs kernel-server then. It also checks for > 3.8GB RAM on i586 to deploy server kernel. In all other cases it defaults to -deskop kernel (or -desktop586 when it is needed)

modulo dmidecode bugs. eg: "dmidecode does falsely use bit 7 when decoding the chassis-type" http://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/index.php?33978 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dmidecode/+bug/822432
Anyway I don't see why we should select kernel-server for a VM...
Status: NEW => RESOLVEDResolution: (none) => INVALID
this is not because of VM, this is because kernel-server imho should be selected if you're installing without X. ie: kernel-server will be better suited for machines without X, since imho it has a very high likely hood of being used for servers. that this is tested in a VM is imho irrelevant, i'm just stating that i tested this in a VM in case this would falsify my testing. otoh, in my $dayjob, i have alot of clients who virtualise servers.

Is PAE enabled for the guest? Also, installing without X doesn't always mean it will be a server. I usually install without X, then after reboot, add the repositories, before installing anything else, so that if updates are available, they will be installed, instead of installing the version from the dvd, and then updating.

PAE is enabled
i guess you have a valid point that it isn't always a server, but if you do this manually... otoh, would you really be averse to having kernel-server installed? you're likely to install other stuff as well.
Actually, because I'm using a 6 year old system, I normally switch to the server kernel anyway, so I have no problem with that becoming the default, if X is not installed. The reason I try to avoid installing from dvd and then updating, is because my old system is slow.
Is this bug valid for Mga 2 Alpha 1 ?

Sorry I but I don't buy the "install server flavor if not installing X" logic On the contrary, some users choose minimal install (thus without X11) in order to install the desktop of their choice later. Current logic is OK for 99.99% of our users. The remaining ones that do such manual choices can install kernel-server themselves.

so you think there are 9999 desktop installs using minimal install for each server install i'm doing with this, (atm the count is around 10 installs for only myself personally...) myeah, sorry, i don't buy your 99.99% i think users who want to install their own desktop of choice later, install minimal, but still install X when it asks if they want without X completely... as such i think maybe 10 installs will happen that way, and more likely a few hundreds if when more server installs are being done... don't you think desktop users will deselect all DE, but still install X?
