Description Jose Manuel López 2020-02-12 12:11:56 CET
Description of problem: If the default Desktop in Mageia is plasma Kde, pavucontrol should be pavucontrol-qt for a best integration with the desktop environment.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Mageia 7 and Cauldron.

How reproducible: Install pavucontrol-qt. Open pavucontrol and pavucontrol-qt in Mageia Plasma. Pavucontrol-qt have a best integration in Plasma desktop environment

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install pavucontrol-qt
2. Open pavucontrol-qt
3. Compare with pavucontrol

Could you attach screenshots of both under Plasma?
This suggestion is sensible where Pavucontrol is installed *automatically*, e.g. from the Plasma Live ISO, or Plasma from the Classic ISO. OTOH where the user installs it - with rpmdrake, Add/Remove Software - he will see both offered, and it is up to him.
There are other applications in the same boat; I do not know how many might be automatically installed.

Need to think how to assign this.

Summary: Pavucontrol should change by pavucontrol-qt in Mageia Plasma => Pavucontrol should be pavucontrol-qt for Mageia Plasma

Screenshot showing both pavucontrol versions under LXDE (gtk)

LXDE desktop, pavucontrol (gtk) is the top RH one, pavucontrol-qt is the lower LH one. In this context, the difference is academic.
This is a 6-desktop system from the Classic ISO; I did not myself install either pkg. Both variants exist in the sound/video menus.

The bug would be if the -qt variant is not included (if automatically) in a Plasma system, but just the base gtk one.

@José : can you say how your system was installed, what ISO? If from the Classic ISO, just Plasma?
Was pavucontrol automatically installed?
If it is Plasma only, was just the basic gtk variant offered in the sound/video menus (before you added pavucontrol-qt)?

Hi!

I've see that the bug appears from ISO DVD of Mageia Plasma even before the instalation of hdd disk.

Greetings.

OK, on this Plasma-unique ISO, the -qt version should indeed be the one.
This is not really a bug, since the gtk base version is perfectly functional.

Assigning to the ISO team for consideration for Mageia 8. Easy enough for the Plasma Live ISO, but what to do for the Classic? If Plasma (or LxQt) is installed, include the -qt variant. For other desktops, the base gtk one? This gives you both in the menus (on my system, in different places).

Plasma has its own pulse audio volume control applet (plasma-pa) which is installed on the Plasma Live ISO and accessible from the volume control icon on the panel.

My concern about installing pavucontrol-qt instead of pavucontrol is that users who find instructions on the internet telling them to use pavucontrol won't know they need to run pavucontrol-qt instead.

Users who want pavucontrol-qt can easily install it themselves.

There is part of the reason in the explanation of comment 5. But we should try that the whole desktop environment has the best possible integration with your tools and so a correction on pavucontrol-qt should not have many problems.

Users who consult on the web, can do so in mageia communities where it will be very easy to tell them that in Plasma Kde they should run pavucontrol-qt.

Another option would be to make the execution of pavucontrol lead to the pavucontrol-qt application in Mageia Plasma and other desktops that use qt libraries.

Fixed in meta-task-8.0.8. The installer will now select pavucontrol-qt if you install a QT-based DE and pavucontrol if you install a GTK-based DE. You can override this in the individual package selection phase.

Version: 7 => Cauldron
