Comment 3 Frank Griffin 2020-01-08 15:34:06 CET
It looks like the MGA network settings are incompatible with NM. Try the following:

1) Use MCC to delete all network interfaces.
2) Remove the ifcfg-rh from NetworkManager.conf.
3) Restart NM (or reboot).

If your interfaces don't come up automatically, login as root on a tty, run "nmtui", and activate them manually.

Comment 5 Frank Griffin 2020-01-09 02:53:40 CET
I'm no expert here, but to give some history (to the best of my recollection) we originally had the RedHat model (/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg*), and then we had NetworkManager (NM). These would frequently butt heads, and the chosen solution was ifcfg-rh which caused NM to look for an ifcfg-xxx file for an interface and defer to the RH stuff (net-applet) if one was found. Otherwise, NM would try to handle the interface itself.

Sometimes this worked, and sometimes it didn't. Sometimes the MGA stuff would have been fine-tuned for hardware in ways NM hadn't caught up to (DHCP comes to mind), and more often lately NM is ahead of the MGA stuff.

Now we have a third contender - systemd networking. I have no idea how this works or whether and how it conflicts with either MGA or NM.

We never got to the point of replacing the MGA stuff with NM. To the best of my knowledge, if you request a GNOME-derived DE on install, you get NM installed because they require it, but it isn't enabled by default. In my post-install processing, I always remove any MGA-defined interfaces as described above and remove ifcfg-rh. This leaves NM in total control of the network interfaces, which works for all the NICs on all of my systems.
Comment 6 Robert Fox 2020-01-10 08:59:45 CET
Problem persists even after removing all interfaces and remaking them - so WiFi is broke right now :-(
Comment 7 Frank Griffin 2020-01-10 15:02:59 CET
Did you remake them with the MGA stuff or let NM remake them without ifcfg-rh ? The whole point of my recommendation was to put NM totally in charge and cut out the ifcfg stuff entirely.
Comment 8 Lewis Smith 2020-01-11 20:50:12 CET
Thanks Jani, Barry & Frank for comments.

@Robert: with long outputs like comment 2, it is better to send them to a text file and attach that (and if it is very big, compress it with xz).
(In reply to Robert Fox from comment #0)
> Since latest updates in Cauldron - two machines broken - WIFI won't work
> using NW Manager
With problems like "Since latest updates..." it is always useful to try & pin down *which* update(s) cause the problem. Doing:
$ rpm -qa --last | less
shows the most recent updates first, and should give a clue. I wonder (doubt) whether one can downgrade pkgs from Cauldron to test such things.

Re Frank's comment 5, it reinforces the long-standing debate about replacing MGA networking with Network Manager.
OTOH wifi problems abound, and are usually related to kernel or drivers.

Not sure where to push this, so assigning globally; CC Jani as he has commented, and is registered NM maintainer.

Something in your NM configuration for this device is screwed up. Go to /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections and move the "nmconnection" file for your wifi someplace else. Then reboot and let NM recreate it from scratch.
Comment 12 Robert Fox 2020-01-13 16:53:41 CET
Thanks Frank - I checked - here is my NetworkManager.conf file:

[main]
plugins=ifcfg-rh,keyfile
dhcp=internal

but there is nothing in the system-connections folder at present:

[rfox@OrionFox system-connections]$ pwd
/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections
[rfox@OrionFox system-connections]$ ls -la
total 8
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jan 10 10:11 ./
drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 4096 Jan 10 10:11 ../
[rfox@OrionFox system-connections]$

So no - nmconnection file

So you *do* have ifcfg-rh in the conf file. Follow the directions in comment#3 again.
Comment 14 Robert Fox 2020-01-13 17:39:51 CET
Oddly enough, when I first checked it - it wasn't there ?!? Since the original post, there was a networkmanager rpm update on cauldron - maybe that added it?

Anyway, my bad - just follow post #3 and rebooted, looks like it works now!

Tested on two different machines and working.

Thx - maybe this is the first step to remove the MCC stuff and just stick with NetworkManager moving forward??

Cheers,
Robert

>Oddly enough, when I first checked it - it wasn't there ?!? Since the original post, there was a networkmanager rpm update on cauldron - maybe that added it?

If it did, that would mean that NetworkManager.conf isn't defined in the RPM as a configuration file. But I doubt that, because I replace it in all my systems after installation and update daily, and my modifications have never been overlaid.

Possibly something in the MGA network support (which would still have been getting control because of the ifcfg-rh) put it back.

I had the same issue and error message as in post #1.

network.service and network-up.service were enabled.

# systemctl disable network.service
# systemctl disable network-up.service

and reboot resolved the issue. Wlan is working again.

I can confirm that this issue is reproducible for me on a fresh Cauldron install (from a couple of weeks ago) after switching to NetworkManager following instructions in https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Switching_to_networkmanager

Removing the `ifcfg-rh` plugin from `/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf` fixed it.

Could we patch/configure NM so that it does not add this plugin automatically?

BTW, this was also breaking plasma-applet-nm for me, as it would not register any VPN plugins installed from their respective plasma-applet-nm-* packages (while those plugins would work in nm-applet).
Rémi Verschelde 2020-05-07 11:13:46 CEST

Summary: NW Manager fails with WLAN - see error below => NW Manager fails with WLAN - profile is not compatible with device (device MAC address does not match the profile)

Nevermind this, this bug is still reproducible after applying the workaround in comment #3, so it's unrelated.

Just encountered this on testing the first mga8 Live GNOME ISO build. The network service was disabled. Removing the `ifcfg-rh` plugin from `/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf` fixed it, but that does of course mean that the Mageia network tools will not work at all (mind you, they only partially work even when you use the ifcfg-rh plugin).

Please enable ifcfg-rh plugin again and paste the ifcfg-wl* file content from /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/.

Also the output from:
systemctl status networkmanager -l -n 200 --no-pager
journalctl -x /usr/sbin/NetworkManager -b -l --no-pager

Yes. Just tried changing that, and it made no difference (not too surprising, as the laptop I'm testing on only supports b/g/n).

Comment 27 Martin Whitaker 2020-05-31 20:33:20 CEST
Do you have ssh access to rabbit.mageia.org? If so, it can be found in

/home/bcd/public_html/isos/trial-builds/Mageia-8-alpha1-Live-GNOME-x86_64/Mageia-8-alpha1-Live-GNOME-x86_64.iso

That's been patched to remove ifcfg-rh from /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf, but if you add it back and restart the NetworkManager service, the bug manifests.
Comment 28 Jani Välimaa 2020-06-07 09:42:04 CEST
The bug was caused by our MAC address discover patch. I removed it and simplified WIRELESS_ESSID patch locally and was able to connect to open WLAN without password by using net_applet.

And as a side note, I was also able to connect to WPA2 network with pre-shared key with a minimal and manual change to ifcfg file. I added KEY_MGMT=WPA-PSK to ifcfg file. I will continue local tests to see if I can reproduce the success.

Looks like this is not enough and the success was because I edit the system connection via nmtui and added the password. More investigation is needed.

BTW, editing /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf is something that should be avoided. It's for distro provided settings and I've been thinking about to change it to an example file and/or drop %config(noreplace) from it. If one wants to alter distro provided settings, a .conf file should be dropped into /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/.

This should be fixed in networkmanager-1.24.2-3.mga8.

Basic WPA2-PSK support for net_applet using networkmanager and ifcfg-rh plugin is included in drakx-net-2.51-1.mga8. net_applet is still having some other usability issues, but I was able to connect WPA2-PSK network with it.
