Comment 2 Bjarne Thomsen 2019-11-26 03:56:04 CET
This bug was discovered by Robert Holmes 2019-10-07 02:20:50 UTC
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1758948

It is also reported by bugs.freedesktop.org:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=112012
Apparently it has been present in all 5.3 kernels.

Antonio Larrosa 2019-11-21 10:56:05 UTC
Just for the record, I've been running a 5.3.11 kernel with the patch Robert Holmes mentioned in #c6 applied (with the diff context slightly modified to apply correctly) and so far (over 24 hours later), the system is still running fine and stable with no warning or bug in dmesg.

It was also my impression that everyshing was working fine with the 5.3.11 kernel until some change was made to mageia7 in updates-testing.
I did not know about this bug, so I did not pay attention.
Evidently this bug is still present in the 5.3.13 kernel.
Comment 3 Thomas Backlund 2019-11-26 08:27:51 CET
I'm aware of the issue, so the fix is in 5.3.13-2 that built last night/this morning...

And the WARNING is one thing... the worse thing is that it actually can cause a kernel crash.

So this and other fixes are now ready for QA:

Summary: WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 43 at fs/ext4/inode.c:3941 ext4_set_page_dirty+0x3e/0x50 => Update request: kernel-5.3.13-2.mga7

Comment 4 Bjarne Thomsen 2019-11-26 13:01:46 CET
I have not been able to obtain the "ext4_set_page_dirty" crash after this update, but I may just have been lucky.
BUT, I stil have a very slow firefox, and the KDE konsole waits for many seconds before it reacts.
These problems are possibly unrelated.
In addition, I cannot enter the requested root password in the MCC window. There is no echo of characters.
I can call drakconf as root in a terminal.
This one seems to be new.
Comment 5 Bjarne Thomsen 2019-11-26 15:21:51 CET
This problem has turned even, if possible, stranger.
I have an Intell NUC8i5 box.
On that one I updated to kernel-desktop-5.3.13-2.mga7
After boot both KDE konsole and firefox worked without delays.
Then I removed kernel-desktop-5.3.13-1.mga7 in the MCC.
I then reinstalled the boot loader followed by a boot.
The delays appeared in both KDE konsole and firefox, just like in IPC3.
How can reinstalling the boot loader induce this problem?
I did use -g powersave to prevent overheating.

Could this problem be related to UEFI or even partitioning?
Also, I see that 5.4 stable has arrived.

Mageia 7, x86_64

System:
Quad Core: Intel Core i7-4790 type: MT MCP speed: 1100 MHz
  Type: Desktop System: MSI product: MS-7816 v: 3.0 serial: <root required>
  Device-1: NVIDIA GM204 [GeForce GTX 970] driver: nvidia v: 430.64
Network:
Device-1: Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet
  driver: r8169
RAM: 31.32 GB

Installed both desktop kernels.
kernel-linus failed to reach login prompt after building nvidia kmod. It issued a warning that the X display server might fail to launch and then hung after the OK. This is becoming the norm for the latest linus kernels and may be something we have to live with.

$ uname -r
5.3.13-desktop-2.mga7

There are no issues with the desktop kernel on this hardware. The desktop functions normally, with the proprietary driver. glmark2 fails but graphics in general are OK. The hardware passes stress tests.

Comment 7 Len Lawrence 2019-11-26 16:51:12 CET
Abject apologies - there is no linus in this update - seeing things that are not there. Time to retire I think.
Comment 8 Bjarne Thomsen 2019-11-27 00:01:40 CET
I have some more information on my IPC3 box.
It uses an mSATA SSD mounted on a FM-USB3 card. The jerky movements of Firefox happened after the update of large number of libreoffice packages. I have a suspicion that files on the SSD is copied to the faster RAM. The box has no fan, only some cooling ribs. These became very hot, so the CPUs might be overheating. I have now used the command: cpupower frequency-set -g powersave
I am now using Firefox to enter this comment. It seems to be working fine.

The problem seems to be caused by a combination of the USB interface and an overheating of the CPUs.
Comment 9 Thomas Backlund 2019-11-27 18:54:02 CET
Putting this on hold, more security fixes coming

System: Host: canopus Kernel: 5.3.13-desktop-2.mga7 x86_64 bits: 64
CPU: 10-Core: Intel Core i9-7900X type: MT MCP speed: 1200 MHz
Machine: Type: Desktop Mobo: ASUSTeK model: TUF X299 MARK 2 v: Rev 1.xx
Graphics Device-1: NVIDIA GP102 [GeForce GTX 1080 Ti] driver: nvidia v: 430.64
RAM: 31.05 GB

The desktop kernel files installed fine using MageiaUpdate.
The problem of not being able to use a warm reboot presented itself again. So not solved by the new cpio but it may be related to this specific partition (sda6 on an SSD). Some damage at hardware level maybe.
This can be checked by installing on another partition - to be done.

Apart from that there were no problems with rebooting to the Mate desktop using GDM. glmark2 fails but everything else seems to be in order. Other applications using GL work fine.v Ran stress tests - OK.
Comment 11 Thomas Backlund 2019-11-27 19:27:13 CET
Actually lets go with this one...
The additional set of fixes causes other issues...

Comment 12 Len Lawrence 2019-11-27 20:32:54 CET
Moved to another partition on the machine used for the test reported in comment 10. Upgraded from version 5.3.6.
$ uname -r
5.3.13-desktop-2.mga7

Warm reboots work for this partition and glmark2 runs. ??

Installed virtualbox but could not find it in the system menus even after running update-menus. Had to launch it from the command-line. The four VMs showed up and a saved session was restored intact. Shut that down and rebooted another VM. That works fine.

Ran the usual stress tests. NFS shares up, thunderbird email, video, pulseaudio, TV reception on antenna to RF coax all working. Common desktop applications work.
No regressions noted.
Comment 13 Bjarne Thomsen 2019-11-27 22:28:19 CET
Sorry. I was too fast, again. I tried to print on my HP net-printer on my local network. It printed OK, but when I exited the plasma shell crashed.
So the cpupower command does not work in this case.
I have now moved to a gnome session. Firefox works well without the cpupower command. The only problem is that I get this message:
HPLIP Status Service: No system tray detected.

I can only conclude that the firefox jerks are a plasma problem.
