Description Pierre Fortin 2019-10-19 01:14:38 CEST
Description of problem:
When screen locker triggers, user is logged out and all work is terminated/lost. Then, trying to log back in, the screen is black with only mouse cursor.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. allow screen lock to kick in
2. screen is black -- no login screen
3. WORK AROUND: Ctl+Alt+F[2-6] followed by Ctl+Alt+F1 restores login screen
4. login
5. fresh login with all work lost

I've disabled screen locking for now...
Comment 1 Pierre Fortin 2019-10-19 03:18:33 CEST
SIGH... Screen locker is "apparently" disabled in System Settings; but the screen locked, logged me out, dropping all running apps. Had to use the above workaround. In case, just now disabled Lock screen on resume...
Comment 2 Lewis Smith 2019-10-19 11:41:29 CEST
You did the right thing by disabling screensaver/locker
I think this is the same problem as bug 25008, but that relates to Xfce.

If you re-enable screensaver/locker, but before it kicks in, try:
 $ ps alx | grep screensaver
then disable them as you did before to stop the problem.
How many screensavers running?

More info....
1. The cursor on black screen changes from arrow to hand in certain areas.
2. blindly typing password has no effect.
3. Ctl+Alt+F2 only is required; login screen appears shortly.

@Lewis
Whether screen locker is disabled, enabled and again disabled, this is all I see:
$ ps -alx | grep screen
0  1000 16139  9398  20   0 220604 18764 x64_sy Sl   ?          0:00 /usr/libexec/kf5/kscreen_backend_launcher

Also see:
$ ps alx | grep ksm
1     0    66     2  25   5      0     0 -      SN   ?          0:00 [ksmd]
0  1000 16102 15911  20   0  46412  6484 -      S    ?          0:00 kwrapper5 /usr/bin/ksmserver
0  1000 16104 16071  20   0 1174840 60240 x64_sy Sl  ?          0:00 /usr/bin/ksmserver

Thanks for the extra info. I will persue this tomorrow, first by trying to reproduce it.
Comment 5 Pierre Fortin 2019-10-20 19:08:10 CEST
This morning...

- screen backlight off
- moved mouse
- backlight on, screen black, mouse pointer only
- Ctl+Alt+F2
- login screen
- logged in
- desktop 8 (of 8) appeared with no taskbar & no access to other desktops
- right-click on desktop gives no response
- Ctl+Alt+F2
- new login screen
- logged in -- stopped at splash screen (still shows bug 17884)

Using example from "man ps":
$ ps faxo user,stat,euid,ruid,tty,tpgid,sess,pgrp,ppid,pid,pcpu,comm | grep tty
root     Ssl+     0     0 tty1      9768  9768  9768  5548  9768  2.2  \_ Xorg
root     Ss+      0     0 tty2     29108 29108 29108     1 29108  0.0 agetty
Will include full output as attachment...
Then reboot...

Comment 7 Pierre Fortin 2019-10-20 19:32:47 CEST
ARGHHHHH... I've been removing what I thought were old mga6 rpm packages and that may have triggered the missing taskbar issue... Will dig into this first obviously.... later...
Comment 8 Pierre Fortin 2019-10-21 00:09:23 CEST
Finished removing lots of mga6 rpms, then added some mga7 rpms (containing: task, system, tray) and the desktop appears fine again.
Back to the issue... awaiting screenlock...
Comment 9 Pierre Fortin 2019-10-21 01:10:44 CEST
PA little progress...

Screen lock Req. PW Lock on resume Remarks
-----------     -------   --------------
off 1 min* Immed. Unchecked Screen goes dark; restores correctly

off 6 min* Immed. Unchecked Screen goes dark; restores correctly

on    1 min*    Immed.    Unchecked        Screen goes dark;
                                           user logged out**;
                                           screen stays dark**;
                                           Ctl+Alt+F2 to restore login screen**.

 * Actual time is 5 minutes (regardless if set to 1 or 6).
** This should not occur.
Comment 10 Pierre Fortin 2019-10-21 15:45:22 CEST
Changed settings before going to be:

Screen lock Req. PW Lock on resume Remarks
-----------     -------   --------------
off  99 min     Immed.    Unchecked        Screen goes dark;
                                           user logged out**;
                                           screen stays dark**;
                                           Ctl+Alt+F2 to restore login screen**.

Seems inconsistent....

Forgot to include plasma(7) in above comment.
Comment 11 Pierre Fortin 2019-10-23 00:41:57 CEST
Now this is really getting strange... arrived home after 8 hours away to find the desktop still visible; not dark or logged out.... ???
Comment 12 Pierre Fortin 2019-10-23 01:43:41 CEST
I'm done trying provide info on this issue; it's too screwed up... It stayed on all day; but just now, less than the 99 minutes configured, it went dark and logged me out, killing all running apps...
Comment 13 Lewis Smith 2019-10-23 11:30:27 CEST
Sorry for all your angst, and thank you for trying different things.

I have been playing with this, and cannot reproduce any similar fault. Being a stranger to Plasma, I am baffled by how you invoke & control screensaving / locking. The only thing I could find was System Settings-Power Management-Energy Saving.
Without specific timings, after a short period of inactivity, I get a normal screen showing the time, big; a short time later it goes blank. Always a touch of something, mouse or keyboard, shows the re-login screen, which takes you back where you were.
There must be something unusual about your system, otherwise there would be many complaints about this.

Assigning to the KDE team.

Even weirder...
$ who
pfortin  tty1         2019-10-23 19:54 (:0)

Screen saver/locker has not triggered since Wed evening...

Sounds like your test went to the clock screen saver... I haven't seen that saver for months, long before upgrading from mga6 to 7... Checked for packages that should contain the clock screen saver; but can't find it...

My system is a tad unusual -- it's a Dell M6800 with 2 video cards which confuses something: on login, I see a full 1920x1080 splash screen overlaid by a smaller (1024x768?) duplicate splash in the upper left (bug 17884).
