Description Herman Viaene 2019-08-30 10:19:29 CEST
Description of problem:
I have two camera's from which I regularly download pictures onto my desktop PC (mageia 6 fully updated, Plasma) using its USB cable. The files from the Olympus E500 come always as Read-Write enabled for the owner. The ones from the Nikon Coolpix 2900 used to do the same until somewhere between 16 jan. 2019 and 4 apr 2019. The ones from 16 jan are still stored on the PC as read/write, the ones from 4 april and beyond are stored ad read-only.
The files on the camera itself are seen as read-only now. I didn't ever checked that before - no reason to do that.

Hello Herman

So, the Olympus E500 behaves as expected (read/write), but not the Nikon Coolpix 2900 (read-only).
A few questions, please, to help assign this bug:
* What File Manager?
* Does it happen with other file managers?
* Are you using a specific image program (Shotwell, Gwenview, Digikam, Rawtherapee etc) to download the images?
* If you do, does it happen with different image programs?
* Do you know if it happens for Mageia 7?
* When the Nikon Coolpix 2900 is connected, and you see its files directly, you say they are shown (and copied) read-only. For the Olympus E500, are images on the camera *shown* read/write (as well as being copied thus, which you say)?
* Is there any way the Nikon can be configured read-only?

TIA

File manager: dolphin
Tried caja, but I cann't make it using map camera:
Never did before, tried gwenview now: same result read-only files
Will try Mageia 7 later
Olympus E500 shows files read-write
Only option on Nikon for memory card is to format it, and that I have certainly not done.

Thanks for this info: a Plasma affair? It would be nice to know whether this is desktop dependant, since they do I think handle removable devices in their own way. But it may be deeper than that: I wonder whether there was a kernel change between mid Jan and April. Cross-checks with other environments might give a pointer.

Assigning initially to the KDE team; re-assign as you see fit.

Tested on MGA7 - Xfce: thunar reports files in Nikon as read/write for owner root and copies files as read-write for user which performs the copy operation.

Thank you for this comparative 'good' test. Perhaps there were Plasma updates in the spring which caused the behaviour change.
