Description Cyril 2019-07-17 22:43:12 CEST
Description of problem:
iwlwifi is the wireless driver for Intel's current wireless chips so this issue is probably very specific to newer Intel hardware
My hardware:
        Asus Zenbook Model UX433FA-DH74
CPU Intel i7-856SU/BGA, using boot option "dis_ucode_ldr"
Network controller: Intel Corporation Cannon Point-LP CNVi [Wireless-AC] (rev 30)

After I upgraded to the newest version of iwlwifi-firmware Net_Applet did not display any available wifi networks.
I tried to remove the wifi configuration and set it upgain using Mageia Contol Panel but that did not work.
When I ran ifconfig it did not show my wlo1 interface.

ifconfig wlo1 up returned this message: SIOCSIFFLAGS: Input/output error

ip link set wlo1 up returned this message: RTNETLINK answers: Input/output error

After I uninstalled the newest version and reinstalled the earlier one wifi worked normally.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
 iwlwifi-firmware Version 20190709 1.mga.nonfree noarch

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1. uninstall Version 20190603
2. install Version 20190709
3.

Does kernel-5.1.18-1.mga7 from updates_testing work any better ?

It has several iwlwifi related fixes in it, including loading correct firmware for some hw, not trying to use unsupported features on pre-9xxx series hw and so on...

If not, please attach outbut of "lspcidrake -v" and dmesg from booting with new firmware

I personally have Intel Wireless-AC 9260 on a laptop here and it works without issues both with old and new firmware and the release and testing kernels
Comment 3 Cyril 2019-07-19 22:39:31 CEST
updating to kernel 5.1.18 did not help with iwlwifi ver 20190709

I captured output from dmesg and lspcidrake -v at each of the following steps.
The output at the end, with kernel 5.1.18 and iwlwifi ver 20190709 is attached.

1. started with a reboot using kernel 5.1.14 and iwlwifi ver 20190603, wifi works
OK
2. installed kernel 5.1.18 from Core Update Testing, still using iwlwifi ver 20190603, wifi works OK
3. reboot, wifi works OK
4. uninstall iwlwifi ver 20190603 and install ver 20190709, wifi still working
5. reboot, wifi does not work (lspcidrake and dmesg attached)
6. uninstall ver 20190709 and re-install iwlwifi ver 20190603, wifi does not work
7. reboot, all is well, wifi works again, still using kernel 5.1.18

Ah, its a firmware crash known upstream....

It it because the iwlwifi 20190709 firmwares added api 48 firmwares, and your hw is new enough to actually load those api 48 series firmwares...

I will backport the needed fixes to get it to work properly.
Comment 7 Thomas Backlund 2019-07-19 23:55:38 CEST
Actually, no the bug is in api 46 too

Comment 8 Thomas Backlund 2019-07-20 17:29:43 CEST
Intel just released new firmware that should hopefully fix this,

I've just pushed kernel-firmware-nonfree-20190720-1.mga7 to nonfree updates_testing so it should be available shortly...

Pleae try the new iwlwifi-firmware-20190720-1.mga7 and see if it works for you
Comment 9 Thomas Backlund 2019-07-23 18:14:52 CEST
ok, turns out this needs a kernel side patch to work... will add for the next build
Comment 10 Thomas Backlund 2019-07-24 09:53:41 CEST
Please try kernel-5.1.19-1.mga7 from testing
Comment 11 Cyril 2019-07-24 17:43:34 CEST
Kernel 5.1.19-1.mga7 did not solve the wifi problem.

I had iwlwifi-firmware 20190603 with kernel 5.1.18 and wifi working OK.
Installed kernel-dekstop-5.1.19-1-1.mga7x86_64 from Test
Reboot and wifi still works
Installed iwlwifi-firmware 20190709
Reboot and wifi does not work, same problems as reported earlier.
Captured output from dmesg and lspcidrake -v
Rolled back to iwlwifi-firmware 20190603
Reboot and wifi is OK again.

Does kernel 5.2.6-1 from updates testing work any better ?
Comment 13 Thomas Backlund 2019-08-08 06:41:32 CEST
(In reply to Thomas Backlund from comment #12)
> Does kernel 5.2.6-1 from updates testing work any better ?

That would be 5.2.7-1 now...
Comment 14 Cyril 2019-08-09 17:20:42 CEST
Success!
started with iwlwifi 20190603 and kernel 5.1.19
updated to kernel 5.2.7.1, rebooted and wifi was OK
updated to iwlwifi 20190709, rebooted and wifi is OK
Thanks very much!
