* Have you installed Mageia on this box previously, with working sound?
* Does it happen with (a) different desktop(s) from the Classic ISO?
* Does it happen with the Plasma Live?

box is new to me (for QA testing with eMMC devices), so no.

will be trying those today

issue occurs with LXDE from Mga7.1 CI

(FWIW live Mint 19.1 is the same)
