Description macxi 2019-05-16 03:38:56 CEST
Description of problem:

I propose enhancement in Rpmdrake of Mageia 7.
I propose that the two package filters of "Program Manager" (Rpmdrake), come with the default setting in "all".

The packet-type filter and packet-state filter

The "Package type filter" comes by default with the filtering configuration in "Packages with Gui".

I suggest that "Package type filter" come with "All" as the default setting.

I think this default setting in "All" makes it easy to use Rpmdrake for beginner users.

Some people who use Rpmdrake for the first time don't see that this filter is active and sometimes doesn't know there is this option.

Once the user learns these details, he sets up the filter at its best. But at the beginning it is difficult to know that there is that filtering option.

Hi Macxi :-)

Do you still want this when there are no packages at all that have a graphical interface, but are accidentally not shown when the "Packages with GUI" filter is set and also when important non-GUI packages are shown in the "Packages with GUI" lists?

If a user doesn't remember the name of task-codec-video, but remembers it had video in its name and wants to check whether it is installed, searching for "video" with the filter set to "All" will return 61 packages.
With the filter set to "GUI" only 4 packages are shown and one of them is task-codec-video (even if that's a non-GUI package)

It would be great if someone would find a way to show the language packages for the installed locales when the "Packages with GUI" filter is used, while omitting the language packages for not installed locales.

It is easier to test whether more users are happy when Thunderbird localization packages appear when searching for "Packages with GUI".

Maybe we should do that, and do the same for LibreOffice and other such packages?

Btw, I think all gcompris-qt packages should be shown with the "Packages with GUI" filter, so gcompris-qt-activities, gcompris-qt-translations and gcompris-qt-voices, too. CC'Ing Zézinho for that.

Oops, that should be neoclust, he's the maintainer. Zézinho maintained gcompris without qt

Hi Marja,
Thanks for answering :)

I am not proposing to remove the filters.
I think all filters are important and they should continue there.

Currently, the default setting of RpmDrake, after installed, is:
Packages type filter ("Packages with Gui")
Packages state filter (All)

I only propose that the default setting, after installed, is:
Packages type filter (All)
Packages state filter (All)

I know this topic isn't very important. Because RPMDrake is working very well, and that's very good, that's the most important. My gratitude for the excellent work of Mageia Team.

So this bug is just a reflection about this detail.
The way the setup is now, is also a way to help the newcomer.
I don't know what the best initial setup for a newcomer is.
I'm just looking for the best initial configuration of RpmDrake for newcomers.

Hi Marja,
I think my previous answer did not help in the discussion of the subject, so I reread your message and I answer it again:

_____

Yes,
I never use the filter.
One of the basic things I set up in Mageia after installation is to leave RpmDrake unfiltered.
I always leave without filter, so I don't get confused when I look for a package that has no graphical interface like language (locales) files, and unrar, flash-player-plugin, rkhunter, chkrootkit etc.

Yes,
If people search for the word "video" with the "Packages with Gui" filter, it will not find the meta-package task-codec-video.
But if they type the word "task" with the "Packages with Gui" filter, all meta-packages "task" will appear.

If people search for the word "Thunderbird" with the "Packages with Gui" filter, it will only find the package "Thunderbird"

But if they enter the word "Thunderbird" without the "Packages with Gui" filter, they will find the "Thunderbird" package, the "Thunderbird languages" package and the "Thunderbird-servicemenu" package.

I do not know how to change this packet configuration. I do not know how much effort it would take to choose the most important (not gui) packages to be visible in a query (with gui filter)
I'm thinking of a simpler change possible with minimal work.

I do not know how to change this package configuration, so I'm proposing a simpler change as possible.

But if it is possible to make the changes you are proposing, even better, I think it's great.

If i remember, back in the mandrake/mandriva days that has the default behavior but the change to actual one was done because the users did complain about it

For the spanish community i create a video for basic use of rmpdrake (https://youtu.be/8_EjyX-qnlA) maybe you can do the same, or if don't want to create a video maybe a wiki page.
