Description w unruh 2019-04-29 03:56:51 CEST
Description of problem: Something has drastically changed in the gimp display.
The toolbox icons are all light grey on lighter grey, making them almost unreadable. The Edit->Preferences, all of the menu items are black on black. The whole setup is almost unuseable. Gimp in Mga 6 worked fine.

Teh File SaveAs dialog has the file entry dialog as black on black. Ie, the whole gimp display seems to be seriously broken.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:

Yes. Updated and mesa-19.0.3-2.mga7 installed.
Black on black and the toolbox has all icons light grey on lighter grey with really horrible looking icons in the toolbox window.

Colour change box has the slider values as black on black (If I right click and drag across the value box I can see the values, but I cannot without doing that.

Perhaps there is something I can set up but I certainly do not know what.

Groping around in the dark, I have made it somewhat better
Edit->Preferences->Interface->Theme and select Light, instead of the default Dark. Now at least I can read the text in the boxes.
Also
Edit->Preferences->Interface->IconTheme->Legacy
at least makes the icons in the toolbox look like they did before. Symbolic is still nearly unreadable. Symbolic Inverted is more readable, but incredibly ugly.
At the very least the defaults need to be altered so that it is useable out of the box.

The defaults work fine for me, so we need to figure out what's different in your system.

Which display manager and desktop environment do you use?

What is the output of

  lspcidrake -v | grep Card

Assigning to our registered Gimp maintainer, even if the problem might be somewhere else.

sdm--Plasma

lspcidrake -v | grep Card

Card:Intel 810 and later: Intel Corporation|HD Graphics 530 [DISPLAY_VGA] (vendor:8086 device:1912 subv:1043 subd:8694) (rev: 06)

Asus Prime B360M-C motherboard. Skylake chipset I believe-- which is why I have to use Mageia 7

Marja-- what is your Edit->Preferences->Interface->Theme ? Is it Dark? That was the default on mine, which led to black letters on black background. It presumably should have chosen some light colour for the text font if it was going to use a black background but does not.

Sorry, that is Coffee Lake, not SkyLake chipset I guess.

Beta3 with all updates as of today.
I also got black on black in data fields, but menus fully readable.
After : Edit->Preferences->Interface->Theme set to System everything is OK.
Icon design are "modern and simple" but if you change Edit->Preferences->Interface->IconTheme->Legacy it looks very much like GIMP 2.8 in Mageia6. One may also chose Color .

I think that the default should be changed from Dark to System or Light.
The simplest would be to change /etc/gimp/2.0/gimprc and make
 (theme "System")
instead of the default Dark theme. This would still allow people to alter it in their own .gimprc

For me also using icon-theme "Color" of "Legacy" would also be far better since if you use either the Dark or the Gray theme, the icons simply disappear.

Alternatively one could compile the gimp program to make those the defaults.

The present defaults (and many of the users would not know how to change the defaults, esp as some of the sub-menu items become black on black with the Dark theme)

I am having the same problem, Mageia 7.1. I launched gimp (once I got around another bug I just reported) and the entire interface is a disaster of super low-contrast black and gray. I don't think this is an acceptable default.

I changed the theme to "light" and the icon theme to "Legacy" and now it is at least usable, but still far from correct. The file open dialog is black text on a medium gray background.

Re-assigning globally due to change to no specific maintainer.

Hi,

Is this error still there?

I have installed Mageia 8 in various laptop and computers, and I don't see this bug in none of them.

Perhaps, The color for gtk applications is not correctly assigned in the desktop environment used?

If there is no news about it, can we consider it solved?

This was a design decision from GIMP developers. This was also clearly mentioned in Gimp 2.10 release notes. So nothing to fix on Mageia side. Users can easily change this via Edit > Preferences > Interface > Icon Themes.
