Description of problem: Mageia-prime intends to provide an easy way to interchange between integrated and dedicated CPUs/GPUs. It is doing this but with some limitations. Once the rpm package mageia-prime-0.4-4.mga7.nonfree is installed it happens that, 1-A second monitor attached (via HDMI cable) can be used only if I'm using the dedicated graphical card; No signal is sent to the second monitor if the integrated GPU is in use. 2-The performance in frames per second of the dedicated GPU falls down to the level of the integrated GPU if a second monitor is connected (via HDMI). These were observed with a laptop with a GTX 1050 Ti and Gk5CN6Z mobo. The laptop monitor is working with 1920X1080 and the second monitor is 1600X900 resolution.
@ joeghi Can this be fixed? If not, could you then please write an errata item about it for Mageia 7? https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_7_Errata

Just to report, Recent updates (virtualGL?) made the usability of the second monitor more limited. Now, the signal reaches the second monitor only before login in. Then, it still keeps the configuration of being an independent monitor, not part of the main one. But, as soon as I login in Plasma, the signal stops being sent to the second monitor. Thanks
If I login in IceWM, the second monitor receives signal but the configuration is "two screns show the same" as before last updates.
Well, tried removing (urpme) mageia-prime, since xorg.conf was not removed and I remove it manually, tried removing nvidia packages (dkms, x11-driver...,etc) too. I intended to check if I could have two monitors with the integrated graphical card if I get rid of nvidia and mageia-prime configurations. It didn't help. Second monitor didn't showed up and I still have this annoying message before X server in on: "Detected loaded display driver kernel module which conflicts with the driver the X server is configured to use. Startup of the X server may now fail." The window for choosing how to use the second monitor reappeared, but upon choosing how to set it up nothing happened as before. It would be nice if there were a way to get the original state of the system if mageia-prime is removed. Thanks
I've another problem before this (basically I get Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0". Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig), so can't yet reproduce yet. With mageia-prime-uninstall (or mageia-prime-uninstall -b or -g, according to the flags you used on the installation) you will go back to the previous configuration, but won't uninstall nvidia packages. What I don't understand is whether you were before in a xorg.conf free installation (i.e. you hadn't any /etc/X11/xorg.conf and rely on a x11 automatic configuration startup) or you had a generated /etc/X11/xorg.conf that uses the intel or modesetting driver. Also the idea to check whether dual monitor is working properly with the intel (or modesetting) driver is good, in this way we'll se if the problem could be in x11-driver-video-intel or nvidia, or both.
Well, I'm sure I had no xorg.conf before installing mageia-prime rpm but I had not tried to use a second monitor then. Thus, I don't know if the second monitor would had worked or not. Before installing mageia-prime rpm, I had (and still have) nouveau blacklisted otherwise the X server wouldn't go. Before installing mageia-prime rpm, I didn't have that "annoying, scaring, message about probable misfunction of X server". Any tip on what to do to have the original (before mageia-prime) configuration or how to check if there still be something left in the system? Thanks
There have been updates today. This time I saved the list of updates in a file. Relevant updated packages are kernel, mesa, mesaGL, and x11-driver-video-intel, among others. Nothing changed in what respect to the availability of signal to the second monitor when I login in Plasma. Thanks
Was KDE updated in the last 3 or 5 days? Since IceWM has not changed its behavior with respect to the second monitor (both with the same image and poor performance even with nvidia), I guess KDE is part of the problem ...
Don't pay too much attention for now to that error at boot about misconfiguration of X, I got the same error (from harddrake I suppose) in an installation where I never installed mageia-prime (but nvidia), and I've not yet figure out what is that triggers such error and how to get rid of it cleanly; anyway the configuration works with the intel driver even with that error. Check you are using an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file at least containing: Section "ServerFlags" AllowMouseOpenFail Option "DontZap" "False" EndSection Section "Module" Load "v4l" # Video for Linux EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "monitor1" VendorName "Plug'n Play" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "device1" VendorName "Intel Corporation" BoardName "Intel 810 and later" Driver "intel" Option "DPMS" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "screen1" Device "device1" Monitor "monitor1" EndSection Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "layout1" Screen "screen1" EndSection so that it switched to intel. Check you are switched to standard GL, with /usr/sbin/update-alternatives --display gl_conf and in case, switch to standard GL with: /usr/sbin/update-alternatives --set gl_conf /etc/ld.so.conf.d/GL/standard.conf Did you maybe try some other Desktop Environment, like gnome or gnome-classic?
About that message, I'm reporting because it sounds like an alarming message. I guess people that has not used linux before would be really scared ... I also guess a distro that wants to be friendly for beginners would like to know about it and likely to fix it. I didn't try another Desktop Environment but the one installed by default with mageia 7 beta2 installer (IceWM). What this could help with the problem of a second monitor, performance loss, etc? I'm wondering if this would happen with the stable mageia 6. I have a mageia 6 installation but the computer is not hybrid graphic. By the way, today's updates (kernel was updated too) didn't change anything.
After today's updates, tried the status of the second monitor under KDE again. Nothing seemed to have changed. But, googling around, in a topic someone asks what if $ xrandr --auto After the command above the second monitor was on again under KDE. Had to reconfigure geometry and the way to use it (extension to the left, etc), but everything seems to have returned to the initial point. Tried turning everything off and on again and everything was still working fine. Now, the only problem seems to be that of losing performance if the second monitor is on ...
Second monitor OK if dedicated graphical card is used after today's updates (357 packages, including kernel). Second monitor still off is integrated graphical card is used (mageia-prime-uninstall) Also, reduction of performance if second monitor is plugged in. Don't know if this is expected for the hardware configuration I have.
Just to report, After recent updates (kernel + nvidia drivers), nothing changed.
And, no changes as for today.
A change in hardware: an old VGA monitor, resolution 1920X1080, is now used. The loss of performance still happens: as soon as the second monitor is plugged in, frames per second falls down in glxspheres...
