Description Marek Laane 2019-01-12 17:55:18 CET
Description of problem: when mgaapplet announces updates, the label for dialog is "Warning" which is in stark contrast with the message itself - "New updates are available for your system".
As seen in the source (https://gitweb.mageia.org/software/mgaonline/tree/mgaapplet, rows 709-725), same "warning" is displayed for three different messages and only one of them (no_more_supported) ccan be taken as real "warning". Other are more "notices" or "announcements" on something but not warning, IMHO.

I commented on what seems to me, also, the inappropriate, discouraging implications of "Warning" many years ago and mentioned it in last June's thread on discuss: https://ml.mageia.org/l/arc/discuss/2018-06/msg00021.html

So, I would think something more positive, "Important", maybe, could be employed, subject to translation ramifications as were a barrier in the past to change, iirc.

I have also commented the same (forgot where and when) and it still "bugs" me.

I think "Important" is most suitable, and i think easily correctly translatable.

For stable releases, most updates are security updates. I wish we'd have a way to urge users to install those, while only notifying them about non-security updates.

For security updates, "Important" doesn't sound strong enough to me :-(

"Warning - updates are available"
to me sounds plain wrong logically - backwards; - to me it sounds like it is warning about the availability, and not the remedy it brings.

"Warning - you should install updates"
is a better phrase. (But again, in *my* taste "Information" is better. - There are so much worse things in life ;)

Agreed

Yes

Sounds like no one ever used your identity to open bank accounts and buy and rent all kinds of expensive things, including a place and tools to produce illegal drugs :-p

I think "Information" doesn't sound urgent enough for security updates.
I'd even prefer "Vital" for those.
Comment 6 Morgan Leijström 2019-01-13 11:39:26 CET
That is correct, i have only been fooled without help of computers, as i tend to avoid them on internet - except Mageia ;)

OK then i understand

"Vital - please install existing security updates" ?

(As the updater itself dont differ between security and other updates)

Still, I do have very strong opinion that "warning" and "New updates are available for your system" do not fit - first is, well, just warning (and IMHO, the word is for regular user frightening), other just information. Either replace "warning" with some more "peaceful" word/phrase or add to information "New security and other updates ..." (because regular user might very well not know what kind updates there may be).
(Same for "warning" and "A new version of Mageia distribution has been released")

Why not simply:
"Essential updates are now available for your system"?
