Description of problem:
Made USB boot stick in the usual way (mageiasync, isodumper) and boot the USB stick to install M7beta2.
Language can be chosen wit F2, but this is irrelevant. After selecting Install in the first options screen, the screen goes all black and nothing further happens.
This laptop has Intel 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device.

1. If you remove the "splash quiet" from the boot command line, do you see any messages?

2. Does the latest netinstall ISO (dated Dec 30) boot OK?

@ Martin
1. without "splash quiet" does not make any difference, completely black screen.

2. latest netinstall boots, installation is in progress now, just to be sure it will complete.
Comment 3 Herman Viaene 2019-01-06 10:35:36 CET
Netinstall apparently completed successfully, but when rebooting after installation I get again the black screen.
Rebooting without "splash quiet" now get me some messages. The last messages I get are the ones on the detection of USB EHCI controller, then nothing anymore happens.

@Herman, as a stab in the dark, try booting with the option "rd.driver.blacklist=intel" (and without "splash quiet") to see if that gets any further.

@tmb, do you have any more sensible suggestions?

I suppose you mean to boot the newly installed M7. It does some more USB device detection, but nothing further.
I also tried the same changes in the USB install boot, but there it changes absolutely nothing. Black screen, no messages whatsoever.
Comment 7 Martin Whitaker 2019-01-06 21:33:19 CET
I can only see two differences between the way the CI ISO boots the kernel and the way the installed system boots the kernel:

1. The installed system adds the "ro" boot option.
2. The installed system uses the "linux16" and "initrd16" GRUB2 commands, whereas the CI ISO uses "linux" and "initrd".

That second one might make a difference on old hardware. You could try editing the menu entry when booting from the CI ISO to test that.
Comment 8 Herman Viaene 2019-01-07 09:31:09 CET
Getting somewhere:
edited the CI boot to remove splash quiet and use linux16 and initrd16, and now the boot works OK. Running now a complete installation.
Comment 9 Herman Viaene 2019-01-07 10:22:54 CET
Also this installation does not work: the boot process hangs after messages on ata PATA.
Comment 10 Martin Whitaker 2019-01-07 21:11:46 CET
Well, that's progress :-)

The most obvious difference between booting the Live system and booting the installed system is that the Live system uses the desktop586 kernel, whereas the installed system is using the plain desktop kernel. We could test if that is the problem if you run an install from the Live ISO, which will keep the desktop586 kernel. If that installed system boots, try installing the plain desktop kernel and rebooting. If that fails, the kernel is to blame, otherwise we have to think again.

Downloaded te latest Live Xfce i586 DVD.
I had to change to linux16 and initrd16 in the boot command to get this one booting, otherwise black screen, no messages.
The Live starts up, I choose then to install from the Live environment, rebooting to the new installation works OK.
Comment 12 Martin Whitaker 2019-01-08 18:32:46 CET
Thanks for all the testing Herman. I will change the ISOs to use the linux16/initrd16 commands in the next round.

@tmb, seems the CPU in this laptop can't run the standard desktop kernel. It does claim to support PAE.

Problem does not occur anymore in newer beta.
