Description Thomas Backlund 2018-11-26 16:42:52 CET
Advisory:
Updated virtualbox packages fixes missing kvm auto-detection.

Virtualbox was missing proper detection of kvm support in Mageia kernels,
causing it to run in legacy mode. This update fixes it so it can use the
enhanced performance of virtualization-capable hardware.

Comment 1 Thomas Andrews 2018-11-27 05:01:53 CET
Host hardware: Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, Intel graphics, wired Internet. Intel DQ45CB motherboard, Virtualization active.

Guests: One 64-bit MGA6, Plasma, tainted activated
One 64-bit MGA6, Plasma, tainted inactive
One 32-bit MGA6, Plasma, tainted activated

Used QA Repo to update all systems, using the package lists in the Description.

Everything seems to work. I don't have any definitive benchmarks, but there seemed to be a significant improvement in startup/shutdown times. I'm taking that to indicate that virtualization is working where it didn't before.

Comment 2 James Kerr 2018-11-27 09:18:02 CET
on mga6-64 plasma

packages installed cleanly:
virtualbox-doc-5.2.22-1.1.mga6.noarch
dkms-virtualbox-5.2.22-1.1.mga6.noarch
virtualbox-5.2.22-1.1.mga6.x86_64
virtualbox-kernel-desktop-latest-5.2.22-2.mga6.x86_64
virtualbox-kernel-4.14.78-desktop-1.mga6-5.2.22-2.mga6.x86_64

# dkms status
virtualbox, 5.2.22-1.1.mga6, 4.14.78-desktop-1.mga6, x86_64: installed
virtualbox, 5.2.22-1.1.mga6, 4.14.78-desktop-1.mga6, x86_64: installed-binary from 4.14.78-desktop-1.mga6

vbox launched normally

mga6-32 (plasma) and mga6-64 (plasma) clients launched normally,
both with more than 1 CPU enabled.
Previously I had to reduce the number of CPU's to one

updated vboxadditions and vboxvideo on mga6-32 and mga6-64 clients
both re-launched normally
no regressions noted

OK for mga6-64 on this system:

Machine: Device: desktop System: Dell product: Precision Tower 3620
           Mobo: Dell model: 09WH54 v: A00 UEFI [Legacy]: Dell v: 2.11.0
CPU: Quad core Intel Core i7-6700 (-HT-MCP-)
Graphics: Card: Intel HD Graphics 530

Comment 3 Thomas Andrews 2018-11-28 00:06:38 CET
Host system 1: HP Probook 6550b, i3, 8GB RAM, Intel graphics, Intel wifi, 64-bit Plasma system.

Host system 2: Athlon X2 7750, 8GB RAM, nvidia340 graphics, atheros wifi, 64-bit Plasma system.

Each system has Mageia 6 guests, at least one 64-bit and one 32-bit, all Plasma.

Updated both hosts, and both guests on each host. No regressions noted. On this hardware, no particular visual difference in performance before and after the updates, either.
