Description Frédéric "LpSolit" Buclin 2018-11-11 18:28:46 CET
When upgrading initscripts from 9.78.8 to 9.78.9, cauldron no longer boots successfully. The cursor blinks hyperfast and nothing more happens. The login screen never appears.

The culprit is this commit:

http://gitweb.mageia.org/software/forks/initscripts/commit/?h=distro/mga&id=0ecd8e7d4731496c9f8f5c9b1836d32f1c828f25

Is this on real hardware or in VirtualBox. If VirtualBox, you may have hit bug 23767.

Does Ctrl-Alt-F2 get you to a tty login?
Comment 2 Frédéric "LpSolit" Buclin 2018-11-11 18:56:52 CET
Yes, I'm using VirtualBox. Ctrl-Alt-F2 works. The text is blinking really fast, but it's readable.

If you leave it long enough it should settle down (when the DM gives up trying to start the X server). Login as root, edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and change the video driver from "vboxvideo" to "modesetting".

Fun, the X server started immediately when doing this change. I didn't need to reboot. Thank you. :)

So, is the problem in initscripts or in vboxvideo?
Comment 5 Martin Whitaker 2018-11-11 19:16:58 CET
It's in vboxvideo (the X driver, not the kernel driver). In Mageia 6 we used the modesetting X driver for Vbox (IIRC, because of problems with the vboxvideo driver). It seems the change back was premature...
