On my rather old HP Compaq 6715s I was stuck with kernel 4.1.8 from Mageia 5. All newer kernels did not work: - FAN goes to 100% - Notebook becomes unusable slow, if it boots at all - WiFi gets killed till BIOS reset I did a bug report on that long time ago, which I can't find anymore. Now I gave kernel 4.17.18 from backports_testing a try, and what should I say: It works like a charm.
The bug report you are referring to is probably #20526. When you log in on https://bugs.mageia.org/ you can click on "Open bugs reported by me" to see the list of bugs that you have reported. Also, concerning your problem, it might be a good idea to see if HP provides an update file for your BIOS.
