Description barry marchant 2011-07-31 00:47:05 CEST
Description of problem:
attempting to set up printer (HP color laser 1600) using the hp-toolbox. Printer is found. A popup states that a proprietory binary file is required. User is advised to obtain the file from a HP source and is directed via an invalid link. The web link and the file name are not stated. The returned message is 'file not found server returned error 404 or similar'. This is followed by advice to visit hppd://hplipopensource.com for more info. This site does not name the driver or provide access to it.

Installation of the printer fails, tested several times

Mageia 1 without a printer is of no use at all.

I have also tried installing with cups. The printer is set up but printing fails with jobs not being output.

The printer works in Mandriva 2009.1 so am reverting there for all work.

The preferred way to set up a printer is with system-config-printer[1]. The cups web interface should also often work but AFAIK it can't install packages. The only driver that is included in mageia and should work with your printer is 'hpcups', shown in system-config-printer as "HP Color LaserJet 1600 Foomatic/foo2hp (recommended)". Did you select this driver in cups?

[1] system-config-printer is available in the mageia menu through Applications -> Tools -> System Tools -> Printing
