Installed this on my HP 6550b 64-bit Plasma install. (i3, 8GB, Intel graphics, Intel wifi)

After updating the extension pack, I ran and updated a 32-bit and a 64-bit Mageia guest, each running Plasma. I did not attempt to create a new guest, due to lack of time.

No issues noted. As far as I went, everything looks OK here.

Mageia 6, x86_64

Installed the desktop versions of virtualbox along with the other packages.
Have tried only one guest so far, 32-bit mga5, which needed the nomodeset option to boot.

Using Mate desktop. Removed an old kernel to recover system disk space, logged out and rebooted the guest. The desktop is functional.
Closed down and attempted to install the Oracle extension pack. Updates said latest virtualbox installed - no further options. Followed the link to the VirtualBox site and downloaded the package. Authorized virtualbox to install it with root password and hit an error screen. This always happens at this stage so I usually abandon the extension pack. It has been possible in the past to use VboxManager to clean out the old pack and install the new one but I am deferring that for now. It was not always successful. It means doing without USB facilities.

Booted a 64-bit mga5 system with grub rather than grub2. Again, nomodeset was necessary for booting. Visited virtualbox site on the host and tried downloading the extension pack again. Same failure, exited with error code 1, something to do with VboxManager wrap? The guest is running fine though.

Looking under preferences -> extensions I see
Oracle VB0xDTraceExtension Pack 5.2.14r122571

No idea what that is. Any attempt to remove it using the Manager interface brings up an error screen.

I have one of those installed, too, and I have no idea what it is, either. But I do know that isn't the downloaded extension pack. The extension pack will have the form
Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack x.xx.xxxxxxx. If you don't see that, you don't have one installed and there's no old one to be removed.

When I go to install the extension pack, when it gets to the point where it asks for the root password, before I can enter the password another popup pops up. Unless I click on the box where I'm supposed to enter the password at that point, the password doesn't get entered and I get an error. Could that be what happens with you?
Comment 5 Len Lawrence 2018-07-08 01:38:57 CEST
Re comment 4: Yes that is exactly what happens here. This problem came up years ago, prompting a discussion on the forum where the advice was to download the extpack and run some VirtualBox Manager commands to install it. That worked but unfortunately the details escape my memory.
It also occurred to me that if an extension pack is not installed already then the check for updates would "fail" because there is nothing to update.

Comment 8 PC LX 2018-07-09 21:01:35 CEST
There may be a problem with this VirtualBox version.

After a successful VirtualBox update I started a Windows 10 64 bit guest. The guest OS started normally and I proceeded to install/update the VirtualBox guest addition. While it was updating the host system rebooted without warning.

Looking at the logs, there is no indication as to the cause of the reboot. The system did not reboot under control of systemd. It was a instantaneous reboot.

The VM was pushing the system. All CPU cores where at or near 100% (not unusual with a Windows 10 guest) but the CPU cores temperatures were at around 45ΒΊ C, so I don't think that was the problem.

Its very unusual for the Mageia 6 64 bit host system to freeze or reboot like this. In fact, I don't remember when it last happened. May just be a coincidence that the reboot happened after a VirtualBox update and a VM was running but it is a big coincidence.

Will try again tomorrow and see if it can be reproduced.

System: Mageia 6, x86_64, Plasma DE, Intel CPU, nVidia GPU using nvidia340 proprietary driver.
