Description David Batson 2011-07-29 02:47:41 CEST
Description of problem:
H264-MPEG-4 (and other) videos in VLC exhibit tearing in Mageia 1. They play without tearing in Fedora 15 using Fedora's current libva 1.0.13-2 rpm (which includes i965_drv_video.so). I tried Fedora's xorg.conf in Mageia, but there was no change in performance. I notice that i965_drv_video.so in Fedora 15 is 626.8 KB and dated June 11, 2011. Mageia's i965_drv_video.so is 562.5 KB and dated April 17th, 2011. It appears to me that Fedora is using a new, updated, and improved i965_drv_video.so file compared to Mageia.

Note that Fedora 15 is using VLC version 1.1.10 and Mageia is using VLC version 1.1.11.

This is on a new ThinkPad X220 (Sandy Bridge) laptop computer running 64-bit Mageia 1 KDE (and 64-bit Fedora 15 Gnome).

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
libva1-1.0.12-1.mga1
vaapi-driver-i965-1.0.12-1.mga1

How reproducible:
Play H264-MPEG-4 video in VLC using default video output (note: XV_SYNC_TO_VBLANK was set to "0" using xvattr in both Fedora 15 and Mageia 1)

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Play downloaded H264-MPEG-4 downloaded video in VLC.
2. Video playback exhibits tearing every few seconds.
3.

Mageia 1 is currently using libva version 1.0.12
Fedora 15 is currently using libva version 1.0.13

Latest version of libva is 1.0.14 as of a couple of days ago.

Assigning to maintainer now that our maintainers database has an entry for
this package. Please assign back to bugsquad@mageia.org in case of a mistake
from me.

Anssi: is it an update request, or a backport request?

really assign to Anssi (please read comment #2)

libva version in Mga 1 is still 1.0.12-1.mga1

Cauldron has libva-1.0.15-1.mga2, so Mageia 2 stable is expected to have at least that version.

Changing component from new package request to rpm packages, because this is not about a missing package, nor is it a backport request for a new feature. IIUC, this is about a bug that can be fixed by upgrading to a newer version.

I'm not sure this was really the solution to the problem I was having with video tearing. I discovered that running compiz (for v-sync) with Mageia 1 KDE would fix the video tearing issue there.

Mageia 2 KDE has the option in Desktop Effects > Advanced > to "Use Vsync". This solves the video tearing issue when using VLC for me.

I am no longer looking for an upgraded version of the Intel i965 vaapi driver for Mageia.
