On real hardware, HP Probook 6550b, i3, 8GB, Integrated Intel graphics, Intel wifi. Two plasma 5.12.2 installs, one 64-bit using the desktop kernel, one 32-bit using the server kernel.

Packages installed cleanly. After reboot, both systems are working as they should. No regressions noted.

Feeling adventurous, I violated my own rules and also applied the update to my production 64-bit Plasma 5.12.2 install. Core 2 Duo, 8GB, integrated Intel graphics, wired Internet, VirtualBox.

Packages Installed cleanly. After reboot, no regressions noted. Used it for a couple of hours last night, shut down and went to bed, rebooted today, running for the last... 5-6 hours, doing various things. Still no regressions noted.

Looks OK on this hardware.

Real Hardware, Athlon X2 7750, 8GB, nvidia 9800GT graphics, atheros wifi.

Two installs, one 64-bit Plasma 5.12.2, one 32-bit Xfce with all QT/kf Plasma-related updates applied. Each install uses the server kernel. Plasma install also has VirtualBox.

Packages installed cleanly on each system. After reboot, I tried all the usual suspects, and everything looks good.

Server kernels OK on this hardware.

Played with this using Martin's new QA updating tool in a 64-bit vbox guest, and in the end everything updated as it should, no regressions noted.

Minor niggle: I believe there's an error in the x86_64 rpm list. That first rpm should be "cpupower," not "pupower."

32 bit *cauldron* tested OK on Thinkpad T42p, ati GPU, suspend, wireless, firefox playing video (...slowly as usual by modern standard on this machine).

Resuming from hibernate fails which may be a regression from 4.14.25, https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22731#c30 but it may be other stuff too, that same machine is not perfect and as said *cauldron* now here.

Further testing from comment#30
Resume regression confirmed repeatedly on that laptop T42p: ( Note: cauldron )
4.14.25-desktop-3.mga7 resume from hibernation perfectly, but
4.14.30-desktop-3.mga7 fail resuming from hibernation always.

Both kernels installed, i just select which to run, and rebooting on same.
Also tried reinstalling. Yes i have latest version kernel firmware too.

Booting without kernel boot line options "splash silent" i see it loads image, then screen go black. Sometimes it reboots then, sometimes just hang completely unresponsive, need to press power button 4 seconds.

journal contain nothing from failed resume boot.

description: |
This kernel update is based on the upstream 4.14.30 and fixes atleast
  the following security issues:

The KPTI mitigation for Meltdown (CVE-2017-5754) on 32bit x86 has been
  updated to revision 4.

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel implementation of 32 bit syscall
interface for bridging allowing a privileged user to arbitrarily write
to a limited range of kernel memory. This flaw can be exploited not only
by a system's privileged user (a real "root" user), but also by an
attacker who is a privileged user (a "root" user) in a user+network
  namespace (CVE-2018-1068).

A race condition vulnerability exists in the sound system, that can
lead to a deadlock and denial of service condition (CVE-2018-1000004).

  Other changes in this update:

3rdparty rtl8812au driver has been updated to v5.2.20 (mga#22808) and
adds fixes for KRACK security issue.

For other upstream fixes in this update, read the referenced changelogs.

Just noting: Maybe coincidences, but:
before 4.14.25 i had one complete hang per week or so, irregularly for soon a year, on my workstation.
*Never* with 4.14.25
With 4.14.30 hang within one day so far. Nothing in logs.

What desktop environment do you use? Plasma, Mate, Xfce?

IMO Plasma tends to hang things from time to time, sometimes even needing a system reboot.
Comment 40 Morgan Leijström 2018-03-31 21:54:32 CEST
Plasma. The thing is the system do not respond to ctrl-alt-Fsomething, not ctrl-alt-del, ctrl-alt-backspace, or pressin powerbutton 2 seconds.

Have to cut power (press power >4 seconds).

After reboot i check journalctl -b-1 but i can just see that logging stopped without any error or shutting down anything. It seem to simply just freeze.

All of these symptoms I have seen with a Plasma system. Sometimes you gotta shoot it to bring it back to life. Pull the power plug.

Hopefully the new Plasma update in the works will reduce this.
Comment 42 Thomas Backlund 2018-03-31 22:38:48 CEST
Well, plasma buggy or not should not be able to lock up the kernel... but that might also be a fallout of the spectre/meltdown protection fixes... they are not trivial.. so I expect bugs & bugfixes for a long time...

@Morgan;

If you can, try to capture what happends by doing this:

From an other computer ssh into the system that tends to lock up, use "su -" to become root, and start tailing the logs with "journalctl -f"

Then use the system that tends to lock up as you normally would...

then when it locks up, check if the computer running "journalctl -f" if it shows anything interesting...
Comment 43 Morgan Leijström 2018-04-01 14:27:28 CEST
This latest kernel seem good for testing as it locked up again twice today

Today it froze when i simultaneously issued two journalctl | grep on two different boots in two different terminals.
BOINC is using all CPU 100%, nice level, and have its data too in /var
/var is on a spinning rather old and slow platter, while rest of system is SSD
But no canary message was saved in that log.
The previous log did manage to get saved :)

Also, may be unrelated, i see twice message of canary thread:
mar 31 19:21:17 svarten rtkit-daemon[4819]: The canary thread is apparently starving. Taking action.
- That time system did not freeze.

apr 01 10:54:58 svarten rtkit-daemon[4819]: The canary thread is apparently starving. Taking action.
- It demotes three instanced of pulseaudio.

That was about the time i returned to the machine and tried to use it.

Apparently it did detect me pressing power button:
apr 01 10:55:05 svarten systemd-logind[2462]: Power key pressed.

Before and after that the screen incl mouse pointer was frozen.
And yes this time i did see a short flicker on the disk led, probably when it saved journal.

...and while writing this message it froze a third time today!!
It is really about time i learn using ssh! Will try.

FWIW, I agree with tmb. I don't believe this is a Plasma problem. I NEVER see anything like this, on any of my Plasma installs.

I see from the journal that Morgan's microcode is among those that has been recently updated. Bill, I know that your hardware is "newer," and probably has received recent microcode updates as well.

All of my hardware is older, still running older microcodes because Intel hasn't issued new ones, the newest of which (I think) is dated 2010.

Something to look into, at least.

§ Just to be sure i have checked now that the disks report no error through S.M.A.R.T.

§ I find the canary messages in journal on average more than once a week as long as the log stretches: september. It also happened while running kernel 4.14.25 which i never saw freezing, so that is another issue. Just fore reference, it seem to always demote pulseaudio:
mar 25 19:21:32 svarten rtkit-daemon[4168]: The canary thread is apparently starving. Taking action.
mar 25 19:21:32 svarten rtkit-daemon[4168]: Demoting known real-time threads.
mar 25 19:21:32 svarten rtkit-daemon[4168]: Successfully demoted thread 7517 of process 7326 (/usr/bin/pulseaudio).
mar 25 19:21:32 svarten rtkit-daemon[4168]: Successfully demoted thread 7516 of process 7326 (/usr/bin/pulseaudio).
mar 25 19:21:32 svarten rtkit-daemon[4168]: Successfully demoted thread 7326 of process 7326 (/usr/bin/pulseaudio).
mar 25 19:21:32 svarten rtkit-daemon[4168]: Demoted 3 threads.

§ And i finally have a lappy connected to it through ethernet, logged in through openssh-server and is running "journalctl -f" I will report back.

Went to showel some snow. Back, i see firefox is gone and system is unresponsive to mouse and ctrl-alt-F2.
Some seconds after having pressed power button for two seconds it awakes and there is much /var disk activity.
This time power button press did not get logged - even through ssh.

A while after disk activity stopped system was responsive again.
I then started firefox again, then it froze after main window appeared but before showing session restore dialogue.
Well almost froze - this time it did not react at all even on pwr btn press 2seconds. Nothing att all happens at ssh - i could not even exit ssh except forcibly, and reconnecting to ssh i get no reply.
It did respond to ping, and i think i saw some flicker on /var disk LED.
Pulled power.

Comment 48 Morgan Leijström 2018-04-01 20:40:44 CEST
OK i found the reason for all that out of memory problems:

Bug 22860 - BOINC do not adhere to maximum ram setting -> applications get oom-killed

But, should the system really freeze like it seem to?

Regarding that it never froze when i ran kernel 4.14.25 that may be because there have been less BOINC work units of sorts that use that much RAM.

Currently it is running 6 processes of about 1 gig each and i have 8 G RAM...

I limited the number of RAM hungry BOINC apps to 4, but let it use all 8 CPUs.
RAM usage was OK, so was desktop performance.
Let it run like that many hours, but then during lunch it froze again
- no reaction to anything i do including power button 2 seconds press.

Last lines saved in log = last lines also logged remotely through ssh:
...
apr 03 12:20:27 svarten dnf[25828]: Metadata cache created.
apr 03 12:20:27 svarten systemd[1]: Started dnf makecache.

After that BOINC have been running with only low-RAM apps.
Now again just after lunch desktop froze again, this time with me sitting in front typing a reply in Firefox.
It may be because recollindex run and index all my files.
Again, nothing at all interesting in log even on ssh.

Both times ssh was dead like anything else, it did respond to ping, but not to power button (2s press + wait many minutes)

So still it freeze because of either much RAM used, or much disk access.

In retrospect I believe many - but not all - freezes i have had was when recollindex was running (lunch + evening)

I now disabled recollindex and keep watching the system...
