Description of problem: I upgraded an up-to-date Mageia 5 release to Mageia 6 using a dvd. I added a mirror during the upgrade. It appeared to succeed. The hardware is an old Dell D800 with a Nvidia GeForce4 4200 running at 1920x1200, 96dpi, 60 Hz. On reboot, the display was scrambled, as in the vertical and/or horizontal sync were incorrect. I switched to a console and changed the run level to 3. I ran drakx11. Everything was correct, so I ran Test and it correctly displayed the test pattern. I used another console to login as a user and run startx. I was surprised when it ran IceWM. I exited that and discovered that /etc/sysconfig/desktop still had XDM and KDE4 in it. I changed those to SDDM and Plasma and rebooted. The display problem was still there. I diff'd Xorg.0.log (Plasma session) and Xorg.1.log (test session). There were no significant differences. 1d0 < (--) Log file renamed from "/var/log/Xorg.pid-1827.log" to "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" 17,18c16,17 < (==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Mon Dec 25 09:24:05 2017 < (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" --- > (==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.9.log", Time: Mon Dec 25 09:35:57 2017 > (++) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.test" 44c43 < (++) using VT number 1 --- > (--) using VT number 3 390,391d388 < (II) AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch < (II) NOUVEAU(0): NVLeaveVT is called. 398a396 > (II) NOUVEAU(0): NVLeaveVT is called. Finally, I moved the user's .kde4 directory out of the way and tried startx again. Still no joy. This time I let it run for a few minutes. Eventually the screen went blank and displayed a mouse cursor with some trailing garbage. The mouse moves, but otherwise nothing. Also, I could not Ctrl-Alt-F? to another console. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace isn't working...even though it is enabled. I captured the journalctl output while running startx. There were a few suspect messages like the following, but nothing significant. Dec 25 09:46:16 lucy.cox.pvtnet ksplashqml[2936]: file:///usr/share/plasma/look-and-feel/org.mageia.breeze.desktop/contents/splash/Splash.qml:28: ReferenceError: screenSize is not defined Dec 25 09:46:16 lucy.cox.pvtnet ksplashqml[2936]: QOpenGLShader: could not create shader Dec 25 09:46:18 lucy.cox.pvtnet klauncher[2969]: Connecting to deprecated signal QDBusConnectionInterface::serviceOwnerChanged(QString,QString,QString) Dec 25 09:46:19 lucy.cox.pvtnet kdeinit5[2972]: kf5.kded: No X-KDE-DBus-ServiceName found in "/usr/lib/qt5/plugins/kf5/kded/baloosearchmodule.so" Dec 25 09:46:19 lucy.cox.pvtnet kdeinit5[2972]: kf5.kded: No X-KDE-DBus-ServiceName found in "/usr/lib/qt5/plugins/kf5/kded/ksysguard.so" ... Since icewm and drak11 test both run correctly, the problem appears to be isolated to sddm and Plasma. Any ideas? One final note. The mouse cursor with trailing garbage was also a problem when I upgraded to Mageia 5. It wasn't significant, so I never tried to chase down that problem. Also common to 5 & 6 is that the initial Mageia boot splash shows some video sync problems, color shifts, artifacts, etc., but is still readable.

Updating to high priority. I've tried tried everything I can find on the net. So far with no changes. drakx11 works, xinit by itself works (creates a proper resolution screen and runs konsole) and startx for IceWM works. Only sddm and plasma present a scrambled screen that eventually goes blank, but has an active mouse cursor.

I've discovered I can run sddm from a console and it appears to work correctly. I can start an IceWM session, use it and log out with no problems. I can start a KDE Plasma session and it will display correctly. However, when I click anywhere on the screen it goes black with only the mouse cursor showing. Moving the cursor to where the launcher button would be and clicking it does nothing, but moving the cursor around will will cause the screen to flash and I can see KDE is still running. Switching to a VT console and back does not fix it. I did find one way to bring the screen back temporarily. I can click to start the Dolphin file manger and note where it is. I can use it, move the window, etc. But when I click anywhere else, the screen goes black. I can click where the title bar is and that will bring it back. I can click the launch button and it will go black Click it again and the screen comes back, but it also makes the launch menu disappear, so I can't log out. Close the Dolphin window and I'm back where I started. No errors are logged by syslog or the X server during this period. Killing X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace brings me back to sddm, but sddm and Xorg start using a lot of cpu and never stop. Running an IceWM session and logging out does the same thing. There are no error messages in syslog or Xorg.0.log that seem to indicate where a problem might exist. There are some QT errors, but a web search hasn't turned up anything relevant to my problems. There is a plasmashell error, "link x hasn't been detected.", but it doesn't appear to be relevant.
A lot of work has been done on that. Is this bug still valid?

I don't know the current state. Since my last message, I tried an install on a completely different older computer. This one was an AMD cpu with a Radeon graphics card. It had similar problems. On that system, I could turn off acceleration (NoAccel) and clear the problem up. Of course, there wasn't enough horsepower to play a video, but other than that, everything looked fine. BTW, I installed both 32 and 64 bit versions on this system with the same results. I went back to the Intel/Nvidia laptop and started building kernels and sometimes just the xf86 noveau stuff. I started with the latest rc releases and worked backwards trying to isolate the problem. Unfortunately, my real job interrupted this process and I haven't gotten back to it. Also, I lost my main computer and built a new AMD/Nvidia system to replace it. I installed Mageia 6 on it with no issues. I'll try a fresh install on the old laptop this week and let you know the results. This issue is still important to me because I have two other computers I need to upgrade. One is a Linux box that is my router/gateway/backup system and the other is my MythTV box.
I tried a urpmi auto-update from a console. It didn't fix anything. So I tried a fresh install with mirror sources enabled. The results were the same. Initially I get a sddm screen with wide, flashing vertical bars. Switched to a console, changed runlevel to 3 and verified all packages were current. They were. Added NoAccess option to xorg.conf and switched back to runlevel 5. The screen shows extreme tearing. I was able to log in and got a screenshot of the Plasma screen. I'll attached that to this message. Unless a better idea is presented, I plan to switch back to Mageia 5 and build and install kernels until I figure out where the problem occurs or something else breaks.

Mageia 6 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2019-09-30. It is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Mageia version. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we weren't able to fix it before Mageia 6's end of life. If you are able to reproduce it against a later version of Mageia, you are encouraged to click on "Version" and change it against that version of Mageia. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Mageia release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.
