Hi Vincent,

Thanks for the report.

From the forums thread I understand that you got the error:

> The following component is missing: lib/firmware/iwlwifi-5000-5.ucode

The iso you used does contain the package that contains that file:
iwlwifi-agn-ucode-20170531-1.mga6.nonfree.noarch

Do you remember whether, when you installed Mageia, you had a tick before "Nonfree Release" in this screen when you clicked on "Next"
http://doc.mageia.org/installer/6/en/content/media_selection.html ?

If you're sure the "Nonfree Release" box was ticked, then please attach the file /root/drakx/report.bug.xz from your Mageia install.

If the iwlwifi-agn-ucode package isn't installed, then you can download it from e.g. mirror.math.princeton.edu/pub/mageia/distrib/6/x86_64/media/nonfree/release/iwlwifi-agn-ucode-20170531-1.mga6.nonfree.noarch.rpm to a USB key and then install it as root with the command

   urpmi /path/to/iwlwifi-agn-ucode-20170531-1.mga6.nonfree.noarch.rpm

(replace /path/to with the correct path)

However, you might need some more non-free packages, like e.g. kernel-firmware-nonfree

Hi Marja,

I have no recollection on whether or not a box was ticked when I downloaded the installation file.

Also, I was getting quite frustrated with Mageia and so for various reasons ended up installing Linux Mint Debian Edition instead. I no longer have Magiea installed.

Examples of why I got frustrated: I was trying to copy a file from one place to another as Jiml8 instructed me to do in the last paragraph of his post which was posted on 8/16/17 at 18:00 in my original thread about this (not the bug report): https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=11916&p=69663#p69663. But I could not do it because I did not know the path to the file I needed to copy and I did not know how to find the path (I don't know where there is a tree of all the folders). Plus all the other problems I discussed in that thread. Also, today I tried to log into my account here to publish this post and I could not do it. I tried over and over again to change my password but I could not sign in. The system did not help me by telling me what I was doing wrong. It turned out that the system was rejecting my efforts to log in because I was entering my email address (which most online log in functions seem to allow) instead of my username. There have just been too many unnecessary problems here. The system is not user friendly enough, in my opinion. Then I had a problem with my Windows 7 operating system (which I was dual booting with Magiea) and I ended up having to reinstall the operating systems and so I reinstalled Windows 7 and Linux Mind Debian Edition instead of Magiea.

Thank you for taking the time to respond but I don't think I want to keep working with Magiea. (By the way, another shortcoming of Magiea - but it is also a shortcoming in Linux Mint Debian Edition - is that when you copy html files it won't take the folder along with the main file. You have to manually copy that separately. This can be very time consuming if one is copying many files, as I sometimes do. Windows file explorer copies both the html file and the associated folder without any problem. I don't understand how one can overlook this when creating an operating system.

Regards,

Vincent

Hi Vincent,

Thanks for taking the time to explain why you can't provide the requested information.

It is sad we couldn't help you :-(

About overlooking things when creating an operating system: Mageia is a community-based distribution, every user is very welcome to help fix the problems he finds, because we make Mageia together.

If things are overlooked, it's because out there some users who are aware of those problems, who can also free up some time to file a bug report and maybe even investigate how it can be solved, are too shy to contribute.

True, helping to fix issues is hard in the beginning, when there is often no or little visible result, but with time it becomes easier and more and more rewarding :-)

Closing this report as OLD, because, unfortunately, this report doesn't contain the information needed to find out what exactly went wrong, so there is nothing that can be done.

Kind regards,
Marja

Btw, I don't understand the problem about copying html files :-(
