Description of problem:task-plasma5-minimal update 5.8.7-2.1.mga6 forces user to install several vlc packages athough plasma was installed with choice to use phonon-gstreamer Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): 5.8.7-2.1.mga6 Todays Mageia 6 task-plasma5-minimal 5.8.7-2.1.mga6 update adds several required packages. Not questioning others, but as my plasma5 DE was installed with the option to use phonon-gstreamer, then why I have to install several vlc packages (phonon4qt5-vlc-0.9.1-4.mga6.x86_64 vlc-plugin-common-3.0.0-0.git.19.mga6.tainted.x86_64 - vlc-plugin-pulse-3.0.0-0.git.19.mga6.tainted.x86_64 lib64vlc5-3.0.0-0.git.19.mga6.tainted.x86_64 lib64vlccore8-3.0.0-0.git.19.mga6.tainted.x86_64). Maybe it is better to add these packages (vlc-plugin-common-3.0.0-0.git.19.mga6.tainted.x86_64 - vlc-plugin-pulse-3.0.0-0.git.19.mga6.tainted.x86_64 lib64vlc5-3.0.0-0.git.19.mga6.tainted.x86_64 lib64vlccore8-3.0.0-0.git.19.mga6.tainted.x86_64) as a requirements to for example phonon4qt5-vlc-0.9.1-4.mga6.x86_64 package for those, who are using plasma5 with phonon-vlc option?
That's due to http://svnweb.mageia.org/packages/updates/6/task-plasma5/current/SPECS/task-plasma5.spec?r1=1136904&r2=1136903&pathrev=1136904 which was done for http://advisories.mageia.org/MGAA-2017-0054.html Maybe this would be sufficient and would still allow not to install the unused backend: Requires: phonon4qt5-backend Recommends: phonon4qt5-gstreamer Recommends: phonon4qt5-vlc
It should probably still require the vlc one. We switched to the vlc backend by default quite some time ago due to the gstreamer backend being dead upstream and extremely buggy. I don't understand the last change that added it as a requires.
I'm not sure if the last changes in task-plasma5 are related to this, but it apparently requires the GStreamer backend now, which I was happy not to have around =) AFAIK, there's a way to ask at install time for which package the user prefers, out of a list of possible "dependency compliers", so to speak. Can't that be used here?

It used to be that way. When installing Plasma Desktop with task-plasma5 or task-plasma5-minimal metapackage, it asked (maybe still asks) weather you choose vlc or gstreamer phonon backend. However - it was possible to get a vlc-free system by choosing gstreamer backend but gstreamer-free system is not easily possible as it gets installed anyway (e.g. needed by drak packages and/or libreoffice, firefox etc). So, please leave us a choice at least with the task-plasma5-minimal meta-package. Currently a workaround is to install Plasma Desktop without using task-plasma* package...
This message is a reminder that Mageia 6 is end of life. Mageia stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Mageia 6. At that time this bug will be closed as OLD (EOL). Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Mageia version prior to Mageia 6's end of life. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we cannot be able to fix it before Mageia 6 was end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Mageia, you are encouraged to click on "Version" and change it against that version of Mageia. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Mageia release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. -- Mageia Bugsquad
