Description Tony Blackwell 2017-07-17 12:23:47 CEST
Description of problem:M6 grub2 graphical menu offers standard and advanced choices both for the new M6 and old M5. Looks as expected.

Only trouble is, grub2 completely ignores keyboard input and persistently boots to the first option only. can't use keyboard to highlight any other options. (normal USB keyboard, never an issue previously).

When to grub2 graphical menu choice first appears, the progress timeout bar for making a choice is already 3/4 of the way across. I wondered if my setting the default timeout to 5 sec was responsible, but setting it back to 10 sec didn't help. Grub2 still ignores all keyboard input.

Could you please attach (set file type as text) /boot/grub2/grub.cfg here.

Also try commenting out (with #) the line starting GRUB_THEME=...
Then run update-grub and reboot.
Does the keyboard then work in the non-graphical menu?

Sorry missed out the file, comment the line in /etc/default/grub

Sorry, can we just wait on this a moment. Its possible I'm having some weird hardware or BIOS bug. I managed to get back into M5 via the 5.1 rescue DVD, reinstalled M5 grub2, and seeing same issue there. I'll explore a bit further and report back.

Downgrading to 'low' and 'minor' while I resolve this.

Sorry, but the fix was in my hands:

Yes, it was a new problem with the final M6
but:

My fixes were a combination of UEFI BIOS changes for this Gigabyte UEFI motherboard, model 287X-UD5A.

1. I had initial USB support set to 'partial', whatever that may be, which worked for M5, so changed it to 'full initial'

2. There were 3 boot options; fast boot enabled or disabled, or ultra-fast boot. I had it set to ultra-fast which was fine for M5, changed it back to 'fast, enabled'

3. 'Legacy USB support' was enabled elsewhere in BIOS, so disabled it, (possible irrelevant).

After all of this, grub menu options are selectable as expected. Strange that M5 worked with the way it was and final M6 didn't.

Thanks Barry for your very prompt support. Apologies for this distraction with shiny new M6.
