Description Felippe Beaklini 2017-07-02 05:19:11 CEST
About 3 yrs ago I've created a rescue disk for my newly purchased Precision Workstation T5810 and transferred the system into a 1 Tb ssd. I've used the remaining space to install mageia 5. The system created three partitions, two with Dell's files and the third with windows 7 professional. I've set the boot to the second drive, the ssd and ready to boot mageia.

Recently I've decided to install mageia 6 RC using UEFI DVD. It installed all right, but boot took me to the grub rescue> mode.

A friend of mine and also many other articles from the internet helped me to no avail. The best I could reach was:

ls (hd1,msdos7)
Filesystem is ext2
set boot=(hd1,msdos7)
set prefix=(hd1,msdos7)/boot/grub2
insmod normal
error: file '/boot/grub2/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found.

There is no i386-pc but instead there is a x86_64-efi/ directory. Also, the /boot/efi was created into the msdos4 extended partition. There is nothing writen on it.

Is there a cure or I should install again without EFI?

Thanks

Phil

I suspect that you have somehow installed in UEFI mode to a non-GPT drive which is not supported, and are now attempting to boot in PC-BIOS mode.

Hi Phil,

I agree with Barry.

Please report back whether re-installing in non-UEFI (aka BIOS or CSM or Legacy) mode fixes the problem.

Please report back :-)

Thanks

Yes, it boots now, although not in EFI.

Thanks for helping.

Hello guys,

I had the same problem, including win 7 pro pre installed
After Mageia 6RC I could no longer boot my system. I think this is a big bug. What do you think of the newbie who decides to install the Mageia 6RC and get this situation?
The MBR is so old that it can be considered an option and my choice was to completely erase my HD and install Mageia 6RC from scratch.

Cheers

If after (hopefully) reading:
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Installing_on_systems_with_UEFI_firmware#When_to_choose_the_BIOS_compatibility_mode
.. someone still installs in UEFI mode on a system that has no GPT drives and is currently using PC-BIOS mode to boot, then how is it a bug?
Comment 7 José Eduardo Martins 2017-07-05 14:39:26 CEST
OK. I agree, Barry.

But, is there any way to block (or advertise how dangerous this would be) before the installation if newbie (as I am) try install on non GPT partition + EFI bios set?

I appreciate a lot your job.
