I can confirm the vlc-plugin-projectm audio visualizer is not working for me either. After installing it, it show in the visual window but doesn't do anything. All the ones that come with vlc by default do work.

I can reproduce this problem here, but:

1. vlc 3.0 built from source crashes after running projectm.

2. I get crashes on fedora 26 x86-64 too.

It seems like an upstream problem.

some of the things I discovered in further investigation:

1. vlc-2.2.6 from source installed under a prefix with an old ffmpeg (v2.8.x), does not display the projectM graphics, but does not crash.

2. Old versions on the vlc-git going back to this commit:

commit e2fcd5b929fb3f702615d93c2b3c2364e433074b
Author: Rémi Denis-Courmont <remi@remlab.net>
Date: Sun Jun 14 18:01:32 2015 +0300

    include: remove vain evil macro

This confused Doxygen and hid hypothetically invalid casts.

segfault when trying to enable projectM.

3. This version:

commit 28c484c277369dc14e2bffd2bee846765839e654
Author: Julian Scheel <julian@jusst.de>
Date: Thu Oct 9 12:08:56 2014 +0200

    mmal/vout: Configure latency target

does not crash but also displays nothing.

4. Building projectM from source after some tweaks to the build system, makes projectM-pulseaudio run fine but VLC does not display using it either.

5. On Debian stretch the projectM plugin is not available for VLC, so I could not test there.

Does it work OK now on Mageia 7 or 8?
