Description of problem: System icons often appear double in the Mate panel; this includes whole sections like the [menu-icon Applications Places System] area. The surplus section can be removed manually. Further, the net applet icon is doubled and a single audio-volume icon is superimposed on one of the net-applet images. Tried to use spectacle for a screen capture and hit the "unrecognized OpenGL version" bug reported elsewhere (#20694). Used bash alter-ego to capture the righthand corner of the panel. Image to be attached. It also displays a problem with the date-time applet which needs a separate bug. This system uses my default configuration of one panel, bottom of the screen, where the original default panels (top and bottom) have been melded into one (physically easier to look down rather than up). After a reboot the doubled items reappear and have to be removed again but the netapplet and audio volume icons are normal. The datetime updates are still accumulating on top of previous readings. In addition two empty panels appear on the screen, one at the top and the other immediately above the main panel. These may be ghosts of the initial configuration. Another issue is the information "balloons" which appear when the mouse hovers over a panel icon. These now appear below the panel, even when it sits at the bottom of the screen, so they are invisible. This can be confirmed by placing the panel at the top. The context help then appears on-screen below the panel item. There are a lot of items here. No way of knowing if they all have a common cause or need separate bug reports. Filing this bug for what it is worth. Please advise if separate reports should be prepared. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Current Mate desktop/panel How reproducible: Reliably. If corrections are made the problems recur after a reboot. Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install Mate desktop from Mageia-6-rc-x86_64-DVD iso 2. Boot to Mate desktop and reduce the number of panels to one and place it at the bottom of the screen. 3. Check to see if the reported errors are evident. Remove doubled icons if possible. 4. Reboot to see if your changes are reverted.

It might be interesting to compare this scenario with a Mate installation where no configuration of the panels has been effected. Need to find a system with a virgin home partition.

This behaviour seems to be retroactive as well. Just brought up a mga5.1 Mate session and see the doubling of the system menus section at the left-hand side of the panel and the datetime applet is also doubled but it does update cleanly.
Thank you reporting Len. Are these issues appear with a new user? Also, a screenshot may be helpful, try it with mate-screenshot?
Referring to comment 3; that is done. Mate sitting next to Plasma on a standalone partition which includes /home. System fully updated. No configuration attempted and all looks perfect. Logged out a couple of times and rebooted. Mate panel was completely stable. So, reconfiguring the Mate panels is probably unsafe. Some minor configuration like remember running applications, sloppy focus... Reboot; panels OK. Stretched notification area. Swapped positions for top and bottom panels. Reboot; panels OK. Removed workspace switcher from top panel and added it to the bottom panel. Reboot; panels OK. Removed top panel and it was immediately replaced by a blank which was then deleted. Reboot; panel OK. Upto this stage Mate has behaved perfectly. So, maybe using and old configuration is unsafe. Configuring new panels appears to be OK.
Re comment 5. Yes, with these tests this is effectively a completely new user. In all other instances I am using a separate home partition (often on a separate SSD) so the user is in fact very old - the configuration has accumulated over at least two generations of Mageia. Yes, I shall supply a few more screenshots. Thanks Atilla.
Created attachment 9222 [details] Screenshot of bottom panels This shows the configured panel with a ghost panel sitting on top of it. There is an exactly similar 'ghost' at the top of the screen. Doubling of sections and overlap of icons is shown. Also the lack of refresh on the date-time applet.
Two anonymous icons on the panel are puzzling. They launch a couple of home-grown applications and should be represented by images which exist in a local icon image directory. In fact, examining the properties shows that the icon image is found - it just does not render.

May be we should add an errata entry because of gtk2 -> gtk3 move.
(in reply to Atilla comment #9) After a Cauldron upgrades and installs with latest RC iso there are no obvious problems with the panel(s). I have done some reconfiguring and shall check what happens after reboots.
With the latest 6RC iso the doubling of the audio-volume and networking icons still occurs, as do the "ghost" panels. The datetime panel is not being refreshed at each update (-> over-writing). About to reboot.
After the reboot the problems are confined to the notification area as described abobe, comment 11.
Tried reassembling the panel and logged out and in and all was well. About to reboot.
After rebooting the panel was undisturbed. Too early to say that it is OK. Shall report back.
(In reply to Len Lawrence from comment #14) > After rebooting the panel was undisturbed. Too early to say that it is OK. > Shall report back. Len, is this still reproducible?
@Atilla re comment #15: Sorry about that. had entirely forgotten to report back. No, not reproducible any more. Mate has been very stable and well behaved for some time now on Mageia 5 & 6. It was OK on Cauldron the last time I used it. Thanks. And a Happy New Year; hoping your circumstances have improved.
On a brandnew Mageia 6 MATE installation I get the garbled icons in the Notification area and although I cannot visibly distinct them, there are two icons for networking: one says "Networking disabled", the other gives the correct details of the Wifi connection. This is an as default as possible MATE installation, completely new users, no configuration ever doen on the panels.

Hi Herman. That is an odd one, and a bit alarming. My original thought was that it was my moving away from the default configuration which caused the panel problems. Going back to the default and gradually returning to my preferred configuration seemed to cure those, or at least some of them. There were two main issues, doubling of icons in the sense of having two separate icons at different places, which was cured, and another a question of automatic scaling of the icons which caused multiples of them to appear in one place. That appeared to be fixed although I occasionally see a one+fraction icon for the netapplet and some overlapping which is probably caused by not enough space being allocated in the notification area. Autoscaling seems to work OK in general now - for 4K, 3K and 2K monitors. Have you tried changing the height of the panel(s)? For instance, everything looks fine here on this 2560x1440 monitor with 32 pixels set in panel properties size (left click on an blank section). Len
@ Len, Mine was 24 pixels, increasing the size in different amounts up to 100 pixels did not improve the overlapping of the icons. In the way that I get three neatly separated icons, but the contents is garbled. I see e.g. different sized loudspeakers in two boxes. And the contradicting network indications remain as well.
@Herman This is a bit disturbing in the sense that while these sort of problems inspired this bug report they had seemed to have been fixed some time ago. It looks like we need to ping Atilla. Having already addressed these sorts of issues he might have some idea of what diagnoses would help. A screenshot or two would be helpful.
@Herman Could you check that both task-mate and task-mate-minimal have been installed? It is just possible that your installation does not contain all the necessary components to fix this problem.
The task-mate was not installed. Installed that one (pulling in some more stuff), but this doesn't change a thing (even after reboot). Loading in two screenshots of the Notification area, one at its default size of 24 pixels, one at increase to 100 pixels.

Thanks Herman. Those shots are instructive and I did not really expect the extra packages to make much difference because I had both installed from early on. The 100-pixel snapshot shows exactly the problem that first prompted this bug. The wifi applet was the only one which did not seem to be fixed, i.e. which did not auto-scale. I let it ride because it was not much of a nuisance on my monitors and Atilla had enough problems of his own. The faults you see are definitely unacceptable.
Reassigning to all packagers collectively as the original maintainer is not available anymore (thanks for all your work Atilla!).

A partial doubling of the wifi icon is occasionally seen here so on my hardware it cannot be regarded as a serious problem. Herman's mileage may vary.
