Description Christian Müller 2017-03-19 16:16:26 CET
Description of problem:

I upgraded my old HP to mga6 sta2, and experienced bug 9079 is back. When booting the kernel, the fan goes to 100%, and booting takes ages. Afterwards Wifi is broken, and it need a BIOS reset to get it working again.
Booting with kernel-desktop-4.1.8-1.mga5-1-1.mga5, and all is fine. Even newer mga5-kernels cause this problems.

Comment 1 Shlomi Fish 2017-03-19 21:18:37 CET
Hi! Does this problem also happen with kernel-linus?

Comment 2 Christian Müller 2017-03-20 20:50:50 CET
Hi! Just tested it: No difference, except fan does not go to 100% :-(
Comment 3 Thomas Backlund 2017-03-20 21:50:08 CET
Does it help if you boot with iommu=soft or iommu=off ?

âThen it may be a limitation of the upstream kernel because kernel-linus is not really patched.

Hi! Nope, no difference.

Btw: It was the first time I used drakconf instead of vi to configure grub, which ended in complete disaster: menu.lst was empty, system not booting. I'll do another bug report on that...
Comment 6 Christian Müller 2018-09-09 14:41:04 CEST
With kernel 4.17.18 from backports_testing all is fine. All 4.14.x don't work.

Comment 8 Frédéric "LpSolit" Buclin 2018-09-15 16:39:40 CEST
Could the kernel be updated to 4.18.8 on mga6? The 4.17 branch reached EOL.
Comment 9 Christian Müller 2018-09-28 20:14:15 CEST
4.18.10 from testing is working for me, too :)
Comment 10 sturmvogel 2022-07-03 22:57:47 CEST
As this bug was filed against MGA6 which is EOL since Sep 2019 and reporter mentioned that kernels >4.17.18 works...closing as FIXED.

Resolution: (none) => FIXED
