Description aws 2011-07-05 01:12:07 CEST
Description of problem:

Installation of the commercial nvidia173 (using a nvidia geforce fx5200) is not possible while the nouveau-driver is in use.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

0.0.16

How reproducible:

Try to activate the commercial nvidia173 using mcc

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Load an install the packages nvidia173 using mcc/Software
2.Go to "Hardware" to configure your graphiccard
3.Accept the commercial module and try a "Test": it will not work
4. If you accept without testing, your X-Server will shut down after restart, Grub ist not longer available and you are out of all your systems. For Beginners it is not possible to fix the Problem

How to fix:

open /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-compat and /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-mga and insert a line with 'blacklist nouveau'

go to mcc to configure the graphiccard, chose the commercial module and save it without testing. Then reboot and all will work fine.

The Test button won't work, that is a known issue (bug #226).

However, blacklisting nouveau should not be needed, as it shouldn't be loaded by /sbin/display_driver_helper.

What do you mean with "grub ist no longer available"?
i.e. how can X server shut down if grub is not availble, which would mean the system doesn't start at all?

If boot indeed does work but without X server, please modify /sbin/display_driver_helper by adding this line after the comment lines in the beginning marked by '#':
DEBUG_DISPLAY_DRIVER_HELPER=1

Then, after the X server fails to start, provide the contents of /dev/ddh_debug.

@ Andi,

Could you please reply to the previous questions? If you won't reply within two weeks from now, I will have to close this bug as OLD. Thank you.

blacklisting nouveau should not be needed: I am only a user, no IT-Pro. It should be (smile), but on my system it worked, when I blacklisted nouveau. Why? I don't know.

grub is no longer available: it means when I rebooted the system after changing the driver (in the buggy way) I did not have grub to restart! What I had was a grub error and I had to repair that first (was difficult for me, because I am only a user). Why? I don't know, I am a user, not an IT-Pro. That was the status on MY system.

But closing this bug is ok because nvidia173xx will not longer be supported by nvidia. Older cards by nvidia that needed nvidia96xx or 173xx can no longer be used in a linux-system because they have to use nouveau - and (sorry for that) nouveau is shit. Nouveau is one of that things that is definitely not needed by mankind.

@ Andi

Thanks for the feedback. I should close this bug as old, as there is not much Anssi can do about the nvidia driver without more information. That doesn't feel good, though, because you can't use nouveau and I understand you can't use Linux at all now.

If nouveau is bad it should be improved. Actually, the nouveau project is very active, so there is a chance that whatever issue you had with it already got solved (not in Mageia 1, though, but the fix could be available in Mageia 2 beta 3)

Do you mind trying with the Mageia 2 beta 3 LiveCD? If you are willing to, please type

xdriver=nouveau

in the boot screen and then press enter

No problem, most of us are still learning English :)

Thanks for all the feedback. I understand you won't try the LiveCD (that can be done without installing) and can't provide the information Anssi asked for, so this time I'll really close this bug as old. ;)

Feel free to reopen if I misunderstood.
