drakX installer bug report for iwlwifi intel N7260 (156.32 KB, application/x-xz)

Description Frank Griffin 2017-02-08 18:13:02 CET
I've just gotten a new Asus laptop which, surprisingly, has no wired NIC. It does have a wireless, and when I attempt a nonfree install (HTTP if it matters) I get an immediate "No NET device found" popup.

If I switch to VC3, it looks like the wireless is detected and identified:

PCI: device 8086 24f3 8086 0110 is "Intel Corporation|Wireless 8260", driver is iwlwifi
NET: Loading driver for network device Intel Corporation|Wireless 8260
found net interface lo, but blackisted
unsetting automatic

I'm guessing that if the stage 1 code doesn't find a wired NIC, it's not bothering to look for any wireless ones even though it has previously identified them.

I should be getting my hands on a USB wired NIC later today. If my guess is correct, once it's hooked up, I should get a choice of both NICs. If I only get a choice of the wired one, then it's something to do with the 8260 itself.

I just tried the latest i586 boot-iso with a cisco usb nic with a ralink chip that
uses the wlp0s2f2u5 driver.
I enter the SSID and KEY...get "the bringing up network" and then "sending dhcp request"
During this request the light on the nic does not flash, after about 5 min the request times out with "No DHCP reply received"

Looking like this could affect all wireless.

That's a lot further than I got. Your stage 1 is actually using the NIC.

Sending the DHCP broadcast request is very brief and might not noticeably flash the light on the NIC. The timeout would be normal if no DHCP server was listening. I assume you're using the nonfree ISO ?
Comment 4 Charles Edwards 2017-02-08 23:48:15 CET
Yes I was using the nonfree ISO.

This was only the 2nd time I had tried to use the nic in linux.
The 1st was yesterday when I was testing it in the xfce-Live iso, and there it was easy to setup|configure from the desktop.

My wired connection is much much faster than even wireless 5g so I use it for everything I can connect to it.

Comment 5 Frank Griffin 2017-02-11 22:06:35 CET
I finally got my USB NIC, and the installer now recognizes that NIC but not the wireless, in spite of the fact that the VC3 output indicates that the device has been identified and associated with the iwlwifi driver.

So it's not an installer bug that ignores wifi NICs if there are no wired NICs, but something specific to this wireless NIC.

Where to go from here ? Is there enough information above to add this device to whatever databases are need to have it used ?
Comment 6 Frank Griffin 2017-03-10 17:10:47 CET
Still happening in current cauldron. If I do a wired install on the same machine the resulting system recognizes and uses the wifi just fine.

report.bug from the wired install was attached to bug#20327 .

Summary: nonfree net install w/no wired nic won't use wireless => nonfree net install stage 1 recognizes Intel 8260 wireless NIC but won't use it

Comment 7 Thomas Backlund 2017-03-10 17:49:49 CET
That's because classical installer does not have access to nonfree firmware, so it cant enable/use any hw needing fw

That's where the live medias come in... they have access to nonfree firmware

Comment 8 Thierry Vignaud 2017-03-10 18:49:49 CET
Which I disagree with :-)
All media should be identical, thus classic installer should include firmwares...
My 2 cents

The nonfree boot.iso doesn't have access to nonfree firmware ?? A wireless install works fine from my other laptops...

Ah, missed that... the nonfree netinstall iao has firmwares
Comment 11 papoteur 2017-03-12 21:22:16 CET
I heard that wireless in installer could only set WEP connections?

Comment 12 Frank Griffin 2017-03-13 04:14:33 CET
The wifi router setup is used successfully with nonfree installs from other machines, so I don't think it's a WEP issue. In any case, the router has no password.
Comment 13 Markus Mertens 2017-03-22 10:24:21 CET
On my system (HP ZBook 17 G3) I have a similar problem. After trying a lot I discovered that the latest driver which works properly with Intel 8260 wifi is "iwlwifi-8000C-21.ucode". I had to rename newer drivers, e.g. "mv iwlwifi-8000C-27.ucode iwlwifi-8000C-27.fail". If I reboot my system with iwlwifi-8000C-21.ucode being the "newest" available firmware in /lib/firmware Intel 8260 wifi works without problems.

Hi all, I vote to a resolution of this bug, I also have a popular Netbook with hte same issue (Asus Zenbook UX 303L), I don't have wired ethernet NIC, only WIFI, but mageia installer don't manage to enable it during install.

I don't have exactly the same hardware version, my wifi card is "Intel Dual Band Wireless - N 7260".

I used a "classical DVD ISO x86_64" (don't know what "non-free" iso means). After install, at reboot, iwlwifi has been installed automatically with "network applet", so it works properly, but not during installation. I will try to attach my drakX bug report if someone can find some info on that...

For me, it is a serious bug, for example not able to use repository access could have comprimised my mageia 5 -> 6 migration, so i bit stressfull to be finish process with a completly broken system...

drakX installer bug report for iwlwifi intel N7260

see comment #14, I hope drakx has captured my wifi issue, but I am not sure, so sorry if this is not the case (I also have some logs insatll.log, stage1.log if useful). It was proposed in IRC mageia to provide this file. :)

This didn't happen on my last install, around Nov 15, so I'm calling this fixed.
