boot journal after GNOME installation (1.55 KB, application/octet-stream)

Details

Description Len Lawrence 2016-11-21 11:40:39 CET
Description of problem:
Trying out the latest classic iso to install GNOME. First try was installation of GNOME by itself - xdm login - no GNOME offered. Second try was GNOME only from custom install - same behaviour. Third try; custom install with KDE and GNOME - no GNOME in the login menu. Fourth try; all-in-one custom install. Selected GNOME at login and an error screen was presented immediately: "Oh no; something has gone wrong". Attaching a boot journal which makes reference to gnome-shell. Logged in to Cinnamon and installed task-gnome-minimal and tried login to GNOME. That succeeded (using firefox in GNOME for this report).

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Mageia-5.1-x86_64-DVD

How reproducible:
Problem persisted through several installs on this UEFI machine. Needs to be checked on other hardware.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Dump the iso to a USB key
2. Install on UEFI machine, custom or single GNOME installation
3.

After trying a CSM install with Mate and GNOME it became apparent that the presence of gdm or gnome-shell would fix this problem. Installation of gdm from Mate pulled in gnome-shell and thereafter all was well. This was noted by benmc as well. Installing task-gnome-minimal after the fact also solved the problem.
Have yet to check GNOME Classic.

Real EFI hardware, 5.1 Classic x64 ISO dated 20-21/11/2016. All-desktop installation.
I second Len's finding, using the default KDM. Selecting GNOME at login -> an error screen: "Oh no; something has gone wrong".

He resolved it by installing 'task-gnome-minimal'; myself by installing 'gnome-shell'. Something is missing from the ISO.

Note also that GnomeClassic is no longer in the KDM desktop menu (at least with gnome-shell rather than task-gnome-minimal); will try other display managers.

Comment 4 Len Lawrence 2016-11-21 15:52:04 CET
Apropos of comment 3, with the GNOME, gnome-shell, Mate combination GNOME Classic is not offered at login on the CSM machine.
Comment 5 Len Lawrence 2016-11-21 15:56:20 CET
Referring to Lewis' comment 3:
But it is with task-gnome-minimal on the UEFI machine. I am not suggesting it has anything to do with CSM or UEFI; that was just the way it was tested.

Please also look at the list of orphans posted on the pad by Ben.

For pity's sake! Please read Lewis for Ben - the colours are so confusing.
Sorry folks.

No, it is not offered by any of them with just 'gnome-shell' added.

It look as if 'task-gnome-minimal', but not 'gnome-shell', provides GnomeClassic. Are you able to confirm this, Len? I imagine it is not DM dependant.

Shall try to confirm that sometime in the next 24 hours - domestic crisis here - flooded kitchen and whatnot.
Comment 10 Len Lawrence 2016-11-21 22:25:19 CET
Installed the iso with nearly all the desktops. kdm included GNOME in its list but now I cannot remember if Classic was there. !! The something went wrong message came up for GNOME. Installed task-gnome-minimal and both flavours of GNOME became available. Need to go through it again.

Added in list for the next (last?) build
Comment 13 Len Lawrence 2016-11-21 22:58:37 CET
Yes, installing on a fast machine confirmed that GNOME-Classic is not provided until task-gnome-minimal is installed.
