Description of problem: When booting this machine: Pentium 4, 2.4 GHz CPU. 2.5 GB of RAM. An ATI Radeon HD 2600 card. One 160 GB Hard-disk and two smaller ones of 80 GB or so. A 19×´ LCD Screen by ViewSonic. A standard built-in ACâ97 sound-card. With Mageia Cauldron (and Mageia 1) with radeon.modeset=1 enabled, then the screen turns into colorful garbage. With radeon.modeset=0, then the system boots fine, but then moving Windows on KDE is slow, one cannot start GNOME 3, etc. Other Linux distributions on this computer seem to be fine. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): How reproducible: Always. Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot using radeon.modeset=1. 2. After the kernel says it is going to load the RV630 firmware, the screen turns into garbage.
Hi all, after a long amount of investigation, I found out that the problem was that the initrd.img did not have access to the radeon-firmware package. After I installed it (from the "Non-free" repository, I presume) and rebuilt the initrd using «mkinitrd -v -f /boot/initrd-2.6.38.8-desktop586-2.mga2.img 2.6.38.8-desktop586-2.mga2», the problem was fixed. Nevertheless, it still existed in the default install from the dual CD. Regards, -- Shlomi Fish
Note that bootloader-config --action=rebuild-initrds does *not* add the firmware.

Should I use the LiveCD? Is it available? Should I install a new partition on a live system? I believe I had a similar problem on my laptop with an ATI Mobility HD card, but I already resolved the problem there and now have a functional Cauldron system there. Regards, -- Shlomi Fish

Did you install from LiveCD, back then? I can only see you tested with Dual later on. April 14th Mga2b3 LiveCD should be released, too, but I don't know the last news about the Dual iso
Hi, This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment. Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2. Thanks :) Cheers, marja

It seems to be fixed because I was able to boot from a LiveCD. Closing as FIXED ans putting in Mageia 2.

I have used the Mageia-2-LiveCD-GNOME-Europe1-Americas-x86_64-CD.iso to boot and then install LINUX on the harddrive. The graphic card ATI Mobility Radeon HD2600 works after booting LINUX.

Hi Franz, (In reply to Franz Holzinger from comment #11) > I have used the > Mageia-2-LiveCD-GNOME-Europe1-Americas-x86_64-CD.iso > to boot and then install LINUX on the harddrive. The graphic card ATI > Mobility Radeon HD2600 works after booting LINUX. this is an old bug that was resolved/FIXED . Please don't comment on it.
