This bug is an old carry over from Mandriva in 2008. Here is the link: https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=44609 While this bug does not completely render the user account and Internet access unusable. It seems to me it would do just that for all but the youngest of users. Also when I was in 2008 in the Dansguardian email list it seemed clear that if I were to take the chance of hand installing via tarball, and if I successfully do it then clearly these Mandriva specific issues would not be a concern. The bug is marked as "major" for its immediate need and for the fact that most end users might not be able to compile it on their own. But with an all volunteer crew I am just hoping it will not die on the vine like it did with MDV. I know it will take some time.

Does this bug report apply to Mageia? For the purpose of testing this, I installed Drakguard, activated parental controls, rebooted to allow acl, and it seems to be working. With it running, I cannot access http://youporn.com.

Yes this bug pertains to Mageia. Sorry for any confusion. It is just that this is the same bug as the one that was confirmed in Mandriva. Here is my current kernel: Linux localhost 2.6.38.7-desktop586-1.mga #1 SMP Sun May 22 11:56:16 UTC 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux I do not think blocking is the problem. For me it has always been about not being able to specify what to block. For instance as I said in my initial bug submittion the user can not even access their iGoogle home page or download .mp3s. The option to tweek the filter for web sites is disabled (or is at least grayed out). The option to make mp3s not blocked is not available. A tar ball version of Dansguardian would most likely not have these issues. Please let me know how I can make it anymore clear. I mean for instance downloading mp3s *might be* a moral risk on a filtered account but not being able to change that setting is just unthinkable to me and makes the program useless.

That works fine when you choose "block all network traffic" on the configuration tab. > The option to make mp3s not blocked is not available. A tar ball version of Dansguardian would most likely not have these issues. Feel free to test and use that if you like it better. I don't manage to see a bug here, nor do I think the software would improve by making it possible to unblock mp3's or by making it possible to use a white list and a black list at the same time. @ ennael @ dmorgan WDYT?

@ Sean Upstream dansguardian has version 2.12.0.0 now Please test that one to see how you like it, and give your feedback here. http://dansguardian.org/?page=download

@ Sean Did you try any of the upstream stable or alpha packages? If so, how do you like the package(s) you tested? This bug will probably be closed as old in two weeks from now, but if you found a version of dansguardian that is more to your liking, it can be changed into a request to get that version in cauldron (and when it does, it is expected to be in the release that follows after that)
No response to comment 4 and comment 5, so closing this report. Feel free to reopen and tell us when a newer upstream version of dansguardian contains the features you think are needed. Reopening this report then, would help to get that newer version in cauldron and thus in the stable release of Mageia that follows after that.
