Description of problem: 6_rc0: xfce4-settings-manager has no root password pop up when selecting LightDM GTK+Greeter settings. If design is not to allow user to supply root password, then there should be a message or something instead of doing nothing when you click the LightDM GTK+Greeter selection. journalctl snippet: polkitd[3779]: Operator of unix-process:17608:5882772 FAILED to authenticate to gain authorization for action com.ubuntu.pkexec.lightdm-gtk-greeter-settings for unix-process:17608:5882772 [/bin/sh /usr/bin/lightdm-gtk-greeter-settings-pkexec] (owned by unix-user:bittwister) pkexec[17609]: bittwister: Error executing command as another user: Not authorized [USER=root] [TTY=unknown] [CWD=/home/bittwister] [COMMAND=/usr/bin/lightdm-gtk-greeter-settings] polkitd[3779]: Unregistered Authentication Agent for unix-process:17608:5882772 (system bus name :1.283, object path /org/freedesktop/PolicyKit1/AuthenticationAgent, locale en_US.UTF-8) Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): How reproducible: Steps to Reproduce: 1. as user, not root, click up a terminal 2. xfce4-settings-manager->LightDM GTK+Greeter settings
I can't reproduce. There should be polkit agent (mate-polkit) already installed, pulled by xfce4-session, which handles password query. Also, lightdm-gtk-greeter-settings is its own program, not related to xfce4-settings-manager other way than that it just shows lightdm-gtk-greeter-settings icon.

I am sorry for wasting your time. Problem was self induced. I had disabled the startup mate-polkit service since I was running xfce. I re-enabled it, logged out/in and it now prompts for root pw.
